If you turn it off and its still too dark, increase the Gamma above 50 which is only available with the HDR option turned off. To see the Gamma increase you have to Apply every time which is a bit of a bother.
I don't see an HDR option in the display settings. Is that setting card specific?
Currently Fullscreen mode has a bug in it that causes the whole screen to darken.
I have the EXACT same issue. The game gets super dark and washed out, but exiting it makes my screen bright again. I can't even use HDR in the because it's unplayable. Also, adjusting my gamma in the game does not effect anything in neither SDR nor HDR in game. And having HDR OFF looks better, but screws up my monitor.
I'm just not even gonna play the game. It's the ONLY game I've ever seen do this stupid ♥♥♥♥. On my old PC, I didn't even have HDR, and it did a similar thing, but I was able to max out the gamma and see, but it was washed out. Now I got a 4090 and 4k HDR monitor and I STILL can't even play.
The best solution to this problem now, is switch to a frameless screen.
