In battle I rarely use engine, just sit still and Lock with X fire Rocket, swap weapon fire, swap to Rocket, Kill.. Lock, rinse repeat.
Mine just auto selects a ship with red trails and I shoot it until it's dead (while trying not to hit the guys with green trails).
I fly using the cockpit (1st-person) view, and I will say the lock-on is imperfect at best. It doesn't really keep up well with the enemy ships. So I just use phase beam to steal shields from them before swapping to a higher-powered weapon to finish them off.
I feel like the 3rd person flies worse using mouse+keyboard, but the targeting might work better. Sure seems that way from watching streamers play the game.
So, fixed for now, but annoying to hold continually. I hope this is patched, soon, also. Thank you, everyone, and May the Sky be With You.
i remember changing it previous before Fractals dropped and changed the controller layout... i had set my left trigger to do two things... a partial pull/squeeze would toggle my auto-tracking on/off and a full pull/squeeze would cause my ship to slow and backup... with Fractal, the auto-targeting has been moved to the X face button... i still want to look deeper and see if i can go back to my trigger method but i've not been able to find my way back in there with steam's changes and updates in the last couple of months...
anyway, my point is to be sure the button you are pressing is set to toggle if that's what you want... then also set that other option to toggle... they must both be the same... that should get you back to how you prefer...
Are you doing it in 3rd or 1st person?
If I try to target a planet in 3rd person, I have to aim really low on the planet.
FWIW: at the bottom i also see kbd "E" for Combat Autopilot (Toggle) and kbd "S" for Combat Autopilot (Hold) which means kbd users can hold or toggel for the autotargetting...
