terrain regenerating on my base
i made a base on flatten ground and now when i join back in it almost covered in dirt
i was so happy with this build is there a way to move it like save the stuff in the base area and put it some where else?
i have never had flatten ground be covered up before my other bases are fine

its weird because some flatten areas are still there
NZ.Zero Mar 5, 2023 @ 5:07pm
this happens after a while - the terrain resets.
it should warn you really.
but yeah it happens to all bases eventually

There's a limit on how many total terrain edits your save file can store, so it 'undoes' previous edits as you do new ones.

For bases, edits you make after you place the base computer should also be stored server side IF you also upload the base. So make sure you actually re-upload your bases after terrain edits (and also make sure to place and claim the base computer BEFORE doing the edits).
Sadly there's also a limit on how many total edits it will store when you do that as well.

So ultimately, because it's not transparent to the players what edits are being 'saved' where, nor what order it will undo previous edits once you hit the limits, the end result is that to us, the players, it's "totally random".

You basically need to do all of your base building with the assumption that terrain edits are NOT permanent, so do not edit the terrain in order to build. if you don't want terrain to bury things you have built. If you follow the "place base computer first" method, a lot of times you'll be fine, but not always.

On a new save you can usually get away with 1, maybe 2 small bases with light editing without the terrain growing back if you never touch the terrain editor again. I have a few bases from years ago that I visit regularly and they still remember the edits. The problems start once you reach the maximum edit limit. Reaching that limit throws everything out of wack and edited terrain will randomly regenerate.

When you select a floor panel from your build menu, there's a small circular gauge in the bottom right corner of the pop-up that appears, which shows how close to the editing limit you are. Keep your edits to a minimum and use restore on your terrain-manipulator whenever you can, or that gauge will fill up really fast.

I think the recent updates might have messed with the terrain on certain planets a little... Check that you're not at the edit limit like others suggested and, if not, you may just want to wait a few weeks until they get a few more patches out to fix ALL of the issues. That may clear things up on its own without you having to do anything to it (except for waiting! lol).

This guide is no longer valide as the save editor will not show / allow any base related info ( beside the 10 chests ) on the tab "Bases & Storage" for some time now.

the best option is always build above the ground level or in caves and dont worry about it. especailly the teleporter. make sure thats on solid ground and build your base around that.

Thats mostly true - beside caves where you can't remove minerals with the multitool ( like cobalt etc ) or flora. They will also come back after some time.

There is a hard limit for terrain edits like others said but I believe the mechanism is bugged and terrain regenerates randomly even if you're still below the limit. I had a base where part of the terrain under floor panels regenerated every single day. I would pick the panels up, put them down and next day it was the same. I had to eventually move that part of the base even though floor panels are generally a reliable way of keeping the terrain flat (as opposed to using a TM). I also had a save that all bases on one planet regenerated all at the same time while all other remained untouched for weeks.

On top of that the recent update introduced some issues with terrain generation, although it was supposed to be fixed.

I just don't modify the terrain and I got used to building bases above the ground. And don't build near existing in-game structures as that terrain can change when the game is updated.

build with the terrain, not agaisnt it.
respawn sooner or later happens
even on flat terrain i recommend to make use of room frames for example

going underground imho is only an option if one either makes use of a cave or wants to hide battery rooms

Yeah, I kinda dig the look of cuboids sitting on those supports. I wish those supports, and the cuboids in general, would snap to standard floor panels so one wound't have to struggle to align them.
