Does the game fly well with a mouse?
Or do you need a joystick?

its pretty easy on a mouse. A joystick seems too complicated

Ya...perfect. You don't really need a joystick.

joystick is overkill, but a gamepad works really well with NMS.

With a mouse you also get your choice of "tethering" type.

Not IMO, I prefer M&K for on foot and controller for flight. HOTAS was fun when I had it working but after getting used to a controller I can't see any reason to try and set up a HOTAS again. NMS really doesn't have the flight mechanics that would take advantage of it.

That sounds fun if you have the hardware!

Flies badly with anything ?.

I'm fine with a mouse, I could never get sane out of a controller though.

The flight model is simple and basic compared to more hard core space sims and works well enough with a mouse imho. Like anything, takes a bit to get used to but then it works well. I enjoy flying over planets, I have no major issues with it. Landings and takeoffs are easy. You definitely don't need a joystick, it would be an overkill. NMS is not meant to be a combat sim. Combat is just one of several aspects of the game. I spend majority of my time on-foot.

I play a lot of games with space flight and/or combat and NMS is the best one I've ever played in terms of how well the mouse flight control works, imo. Quite a few of the games I absolutely cannot handle the mouse controls at all for flight and switch to a flight stick or gamepad (depending on the game), when flying. NMS is pretty much the only one where I stay with M&KB for all aspects of the game.

What flying? Flight simulator is underrated.

i love the controller... one stick moves, the other stick looks around, and i don't have to sit up to the desk/table to reach the keyboard and mouse... i can easily sit across the room some feet/meters away and use my controller while relaxing in my easy chair... no way to have that freedom with mouse and keyboard... especially since the mouse needs a hard flat surface to operate on... trackball? maybe but...

the only real problems i have is when my hand(s) cramp or when my thumbs pop/jerk on the stick(s) and cause actions i don't want to happen at that point

[EDIT] i should also add that for me, using a controller makes for smoother looking around... none of that jerking to the left and jerking around to the right when looking about... just watching streams with folks using mouse+keyboard and them flipping/jerking from side to side while looking around gives me headaches and nausea at times... i mean, how do they even have time to focus on what's out there in the scene? no, i never get motion sick IRL but this method of movement and looking around hurts...

I don't think you can judge the method of control by watching. It's different when you're in control. By "jerk", it sounds like it just means the player can look where they want quickly and accurately. That is an advantage, though quick, instinctive, accurate motions may be less pleasant for the audience. For me, thumbsticks are an awfully awkward way of controlling anything in a 3D world. With effort, I can become passable (on consoles), but if the game requires any sort of speed and precision, it just becomes impossible. NMS doesn't really fall into that category though, luckily.

Mouse is okay - I prefer my HOTAS in VR and non-VR

actually, you can... in all streams i've ever seen, controller players have smooth movement when looking around... you can actually see the scenery and focus on parts of it while in motion... whereas all mouse players flick left and flick right very fast... so fast, in many cases, that there's barely a second, two seconds at most, between looking to the left and flipping 180 degrees to look to the right... the difference between the two control styles is very noticeable...

true to a point... i used to be a WASD+mouse player but that was back before PC games had controller support... original DOOM, Wolfenstein, Heretic, Hexen, Descent, etc... i can't play like that any more, though...

very quickly... i can't speak to accuracy, though... as a viewer the screen just flips from looking in one direction to looking in another and there's barely any time to actually see anything before there's another flop to look in another direction...

yup to both statements... i mean, i well remember getting beaten to death all the time in the first online capable MP FPS games simply because another player was connected to the 'net via some university high-speed connection whereas i was connected via dialup... ugh^3

yep... when i got my controller it took me a little bit to become proficient with it... do i wish it would turn and move faster? yeah, kinda but then i lose my precision... maybe i need a larger custom controller like two hand-held joysticks where i have a larger area of movement for the sticks to give me more control over how far i move them... that's probably my biggest problem with controllers... the field of movement of the sticks is pretty small/short when compared to full-size joysticks...

A friend on here said to me once when I was trying to shoot him down, a controller gives a tighter turning circle. So I never totally got him.

Hope that helps
