inventory auto sort
Hello every one , i recently started playing no mans sky again and absolutely love all the new content , you rock hello games ....
however i noticed that my inventory is a complete mess of random stuff , is there an auto sort function that they have added ? if its not added are they planning on it ? that would really help me out.
on a side note the new freighter interior style is really cool , way better than the old version.

You can name the containers and create a habit of using them by type. As a general rule, if you can find it all around you on planet, take only when you need. Early game the "pressures" of inventory, especially easy to find inventory, are great and just accept that as a fact of life.

Late game, your suit or ship inventory should serve. No need to really sort those since the game will use them regardless of where they are.

Once you get the matter beam on the freighter, everything becomes super easy. You can pull and put from anywhere in a system from your storage.

It does not take long and you will have more storage then you actually need. I have several saves and never use a couple of my storage containers. You do have to learn what you need to keep for emergencies and what to sell off. That comes with experience.

In case you did not know, even if you have a sliver (like 1) of one of the special metals (cad, indium, emeril, and so on) you can craft as much as you need with a refiner. No need to find some goofy planet to mine a new supply. I often just cannibalize parts early game to get that sliver of what I need for refining.

the answers are "no" and "no one outside of HG knows because they don't share information before updates are released"...

personally speaking, i don't want any sorting done... why? because i learned that i can craft stuff (eg) in my storage cubes if i have the necessary materials in that storage cube... this means that i may need (eg) carbon in more than one cube and sorting could mess that up by moving it all to one cube... being able to craft things in the storage cubes saves the step(s) of having to craft something in your exosuit, star ship, exocraft, or freighter and then move it somewhere else...

another reason i don't want any sorting done is because it could all too easily mess up my own ""sorting"" of my materials... i have certain materials i place in certain slots in my suit and ship... things i need more often are at the top while things i need less often are at the bottom... but it depends, too, on what i'm doing and what type of "build" i'm working on...

I sort my containers because it's much easier to find something quickly when you need it.
I have a container for raw materials, a container for building materials, a container for tech stuff, a container for fuel related stuff, a container for upgrades etc.
Apart from that i do it like wkitty42. Most used items and consumables in the suit respectively starship and one freighter container for recurring crafting.

Ok... but they could add a "sort all" button as an option. Many games do this, and out of most games I have played, this one has the most variety of items/resources I have ever seen, yet they have opted to not have a sorting button.

Yes they should add better and advanced inventory management. At least as an option so we could use it at our own convenience. Know that NMS has SO MUCH stuff, complex materials and crafting recipes, even much more complicated than Minecraft. Yet it's inventory system is almost as simple as Minecraft except several features, unless you are not interested in crafting and cooking (which is totally fine the game has other aspects to offer), that's not really enough. Games like this could really use a detailed management system. I really started to have this feeling after entering mid-late stage of the game.

The devs don't seem to bother maybe because they don't want to mess with this part either....as it's too complex and players have already gotten used to it....

An option wouldn't affect other players who don't want it, and I refuse to believe it is all that complex. Every item has a "type", and it would merely need to sort by those types, and then in alphabetical order.
Grimmslayer73 Apr 4, 2023 @ 6:14am
The devs can't even make the inventory open to the same place every time.... I doubt they could pull off an inventory sort feature.

Those who do not need to sort, may not sort!
Whoever needs it will press the button.
I am also experiencing inconvenience.
Grimmslayer73 Apr 2, 2024 @ 10:05am
Inventory auto sort is a bad idea, but just for the sake of discussion..... when you press the magic sort button, what goes where? Do minerals/resources go at the top of the inventory or does consumables like batteries go at the top? Maybe quest items should be at the top? what's next? Trade items? Or do those go at the bottom? If resources are at the top and I add another resource that wasn't there before, does everything else get pushed down? Now everything below the resource I just added is in a different spot. Or, should it be alphabetical? Now everything is mixed up. Or maybe the dev who programs it should just make everything go where he wants? See what I mean? No 2 players will ever agree on what should go where.

Whichever way such a feature would sort, it will be the wrong way according to many threads coming to the forums after release. It should have been done different, is the argument, it's not sorting right.

The game lacks all kinds of QoL improvements, be it around inventory, crafting out of containers or UI improvements on basically everything.
But I won't hold my breath...

I built my first container in a base then built a second base on another planet also with a container and they linked.
If I build a second container and put it next to one of the others does it link too? Will it link to a 4th one if I build it in the other base?

Every time you access container 1, it will have the same contents as every other container 1, no matter where in the universe it is. It's the same way with all 10 containers. Also, if you access another players containers, you will find the contents of your own containers.

I do wish there was a sort option but at least they give tons of inventory slots now. The old inventory from years ago was a nightmare compared to now.

It would be cool to be able to sort by minerals, gasses, good etc.
