NM: [latest Nvidia drivers fixed the issue] wow fractal is kind of a mess
Now Im not one to bash the game because I love it but I can't even run the game. Just started happening, been playing since 2016...maybe because im on experimental?

The experimental actually fixed few issues for me and my game hasn't crashed since yesterday. It crashed at least 20x in the first few days after the patch. Seems to be getting better.

must be my GPU drivers.

It's quite possible. But get the latest version directly from Nvida, AMD or Intel and install them manually. Don't trust Windows to update the graphics drivers. Windows drivers are always several versions behind what's current.

I have no idea why drivers need to be updated for seemingly no reason but sometimes seemingly for no reason they do. Do give it a try.

Absolutely. I have no confidence in Microsoft data brokering since XP. And every version is more and more telemetry for Microsoft's profit. You know there is even a que in microsoft that automatically detects if you type in "Bill Gates"? Seriously. Guess he wants to mark who might be trying to take him out as he gobbles up all the worlds resources.... lol.

the drivers have bugs in them that are fixed, too... plus they may bring new capabilities or even fix existing ones that were flawed in some way...

there's also the thing that some GPU drivers have specific code in them to fix flaws in some games and how they do some graphics things... that was a huge revelation several years ago when that information was made public...

AAAANNNDDD it works now. Woot!

Thank you for this thread! I rely on the GeForce Experience icon alert in the taskbar to know when new drivers are ready, and hadn't noticed that Windows moved that icon to the "hidden" section...which means I wasn't seeing that there was an update available.

No reason? The game has been updated. Software needs to be constantly updated as tech evolves. A new game version may use new technologies, new APIs and may require better driver support. Or new drivers have new features or fixes and improvements and a game or an app may specifically require those new drivers for that reason. Perhaps Nvidia added something to their new driver that NMS requires now. I don't know what happened but I'm sure there is a sound reason for this. It's inconvenient but that's the way it is.

Windows 11? It hides all new icons in the tray under the little arrow thingy? You can un-hide these from the Taskbar Settings. Unfortunately, every time there is Nvidia software updated Windows treats the Nvidia tray icon as "new" and hides it again. You have to un-hide the Nvidia icon after every update. One of the major Windows 11 annoyances. In Windows 10 you could set this to show all icons all the time. In Windows 11 you have un-hide them individually.

Oh please, not this.... really? Are you serious? Do you realize that Bill Gates left Microsoft many years ago and has nothing to with MS other than being a shareholder? Your conspiracy theories have nothing to do with why NMS requires new drivers...

@Zak, nope, Windows 10. It hides things by itself on occassion as well, even though I have settings tweaked so that it should not do it.

Maybe they added this "feature" to Windows 10 with an update then :( I remember those tray icons were always visible in Windows 10.
Jaggid Edje Feb 27, 2023 @ 3:41pm
Nah, there have been settings for hiding/unhiding tray icons since the day Windows 10 released. You can also drag and drop to move them between hidden/unhidden.

It's been a feature since at least Windows XP, if not longer, and all versions of Windows since with some configurable settings for what gets auto-hidden.

Yes, but there was a global setting to always show all icons in the tray, even newly added ones. I don't remember this being a problem in Windows 10. In Windows 11 every new tray icon is hidden and there is no global option to always how these icons.
