So if you had 14 minutes in and died, you need to to redo those 14 minutes before it will start counting up again. Honestly, I have always just let that achievement occur naturally and never thought about it. Sooner or later you will spend enough time exploring extreme hazard planets and get the achievement.
As you probably know, it only works on an extreme hazard planet and while there is debate on when it counts, my understanding is you do not get credit inside a building or even underground. You have to be out in the elements.
It could just be time dilation for me avoiding getting dead, but the time seems to pass quicker if you are on an extreme planet with multiple threats. (extreme weather, extreme critters, extreme sentinels)
In any case, those multiple threat planets are the most interesting to explore because you really are having to manage your hazard protection and keep moving/dancing out of the way to have success.
At least in my experience, I have noted that often the timer will not start up again if I try to just keep going to the same extreme planet to get the achievement. Best to just find a new one.
As I noted at the beginning, the achievement is kind of quirky. On most of my saves, I just let it occur naturally rather then actively worry about it. It always happens if you play long enough.
