Any comparisons to give an idea on what to expect?
Most of us here play with multiplayer disabled or on the switch which does not have multiplayer yet if ever flying our ships around looking for cool stuff in 256 different galaxies (mostly repetitive) having fun finding stuff that is somewhat randomly generated.
Starting out is the most difficult the game gets for the first 30 minutes or so then after that upgrading your equipment makes the game easier the more you upgrade. You pretty much learn the game as you go as there isn't a tutorial really. See below.
You are dropped into the game with a broken 'gun' and have to repair it and find your ship on a semi-hostile planet (atmosphere that is cold/hot/radiated/fungal) repair your ship with the materials you melee/mine around the ship. After that you explore the galaxy or follow the guided tour initially or fully as you wish.
You get PC and Xbox version in one purchase.
But there is no remote play for MS Store.
The only thing I find interesting at this point are the expeditions. Expeditions are limited timeframe, goal oriented adventures that are completely separate from your main game. The problem is that there aren't always expeditions available to play. Like now.
In the beginning, you'll spend many hours just managing and expanding your initally very limited item inventory capacity. Once you've expanded it and start using storage and/or a freighter, that becomes a non-issue. As does most early game survival.
They could have made the game so much better by adding more elements of danger. There's just not a lot of danger to be had. Combat with the "sentinel" bots is super repetitive and easy once you have a souped-up gun. Some of the missions involve exploration of derelict freighters... but there's no real danger there either. I was hoping for some super cool half-dead crewmembers or aliens that attack while on board, but nope.
Nobody attacks your freighter either. At least, my fleet has never been attacked. That would have also been very cool. That would make it so that managing your fleet of frigates would be more crucial as to what to send and what to keep in reserve. The fictional adventures of the frigate captains is more entertaining than the game.
All the planets, large and tiny, have the same gravity. None I've seen are completely uninhabitable or so dangerous as to present a real hazard. No life forms will really present an outright danger either, at least none that I've come across.
Also, the flight and driving controls are trash. They really take away from the enjoyment of flying or driving.
After what is about 350 hours, I'm just about over it. At least for now.
The planets are huge and they are all the same and nothing changes, only the devs put some sort of algorithm to change the names of certain plants, animals and etc. Exploitation is a farce, you enter any planet and it basically gives you the feeling that you've been there, like I said, it's the algorithm the devs put into everything since no planets were handcrafted.
So, when you want to visit a planet that has forests, waterfalls, rivers, etc, it is not possible, all terrains are equal, so basically you start to get bored and any planet you go to in survival mode will spawn some sentry no matter where you land the ship. As some here have already said that there are no challenges, there is no this or that, for me it ends up getting very annoying that you have to keep doing the same thing over and over again and keep playing something repetitive that won't get you anywhere. I could have taken my money and bought something else more efficient, should have picked up Mass Effect LE even though I've played the trilogy before or at least something worth my time. I don't want to detract from the devs, but if the game was handcrafted, I mean the planets and moons, maybe it would be better...
It's hard to believe I have almost 1,000 hours. I'd say it's worth it.
NMS is not an exciting game. Just how I like it. It's my kind of beautiful, and laid back.
