Ship scrapping
Whenever I go to scrap a starship I bought or repaired, my hauler is always the one that is spawned in as the replacement. Even though I used my fighter before hopping into the ship in question to be scrapped.

I think it reverts to whatever ship in your fleet is the earliest obtained. For example I still have my starter ship (kept it for sentimental reasons) and whenever I scrap a ship, even though I own 8 others and never use it, my starter ship always spawns in.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

@Lindy Bomber has the right of it, but in case you aren't clear what that actually means, in simplest terms think of your ship "slots" as being numbered from 0 to 8. When you scrap a ship, it swaps to the ship in slot 0, unless that slot is empty. If it is it switches to the ship in slot 1, and so on.
Basically it starts at slot 0 and works it's way counting up through the 'array' until it gets to a slot that actually has a ship in it.

It will always switch to that hauler, because it is in a slot before the slot your fighter is in.

The ship slots are also filled in the same manner, so if slot 0 is empty, then the next ship you get will occupy that slot. Any time you claim a new ship, it fills the slots, starting at 0, and counting up, until it finds an empty slot to drop the ship into.

I actually use this specific behaviour to my advantage. In every new save, I work to fill all of my ship slots with crashed junker ships. And I keep them, until I'm ready to start getting ships that I know I plan to keep long term. Then i can control exactly which slot any new ship goes into by 'exchanging' it specifically with the ship in that slot number.

Man, I wish they changed it so it swaps to the last active ship you got in. It's annoying I have to fly my hauler back into my freighter and get into the ship I want to use.

i have the same issue, i'd like my red squid ship to be made ship 0, but some ugly exotic i brought ended up as ship 0 instead, so when i sell the scrapped ship and it reverts, i have to actually leave the system if i have the freighter in the same system in order to get the ships on the freighter to spawn when i return. so when you go for one of those ship selling sprees, make sure to not have your freighter in the same system as the station you are scrapping your junker at.

oh and that ugly exotic in ship slot 0 i traded out for another exotic which was a damn sight more better to look at.

FYI: 'Freighter Ship Salvage Terminals' mod can help with some (if not all) of your ship scrapping gymnastics
https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2601

and/or

the 'NMS Companion' management tool will (amongst many other things) enable you to backup/load ships into any ship slot

it is the one in the lowest occupied slot...

for example: if you have 9 star ships (0-8) and you scrap that starter ship you have been holding on to, then your slot 0 will be empty... now, let's say you find a new ship you want so you acquire it... since your slots 1-8, in this example, are filled, this new ship will go into your slot 0... now if you scrap the ship in any other slot (1-8), this new ship in slot 0 will be the one brought in to replace it...

let's go back to the first part of the above example... if you have 9 ships and you scrap your starter ship, slot 0 is open... let's say you scrap the ship in slot 8... the ship in slot 1 will be brought in because slot 1 is the lowest occupied slot... scrap that ship in slot 1 and the one in slot 2 will come in... now if you scrap 7, the one in 2 will come in (again)...

IIRC when you acquire new ships, they are placed into the lowest numbered empty slot so since your slots 0, 1, 7 and 8 are empty, they will be the next ones to be filled, in order from lowest to highest, and whatever ship is placed in slot 0 will be your new default ship when you scrap the next one you scrap...

who flies back to their freighter after scrapping ships? i use the space station teleport to go back to my freighter in the same way i used my freighter's teleport to get to the station to scrap the ship i scrapped ;)

why? does your quick menu not work? the quick menu where you summon the ship you want? you don't need all of your ships spawned on your freighter... i rarely see any of mine other than the one that is currently my default... if i want another one, i simply use the quick menu to summon the one i want and it replaces the one i have on the landing pad... no need for fapping around leaving the system and whatnot...

i don't repair the scappers i find on planets (meaning the quick menu option is useless), i use the portal to travel to the freighter, jump into the scrapper as i found it on the planet, i then use the portal to get to a station and sell the scrapper there as it shows up on the station with your character.

after that the ship 0 slots back to the ugly exotic at the time. i can't use the quick menu on the freighter or space station, it won't let me.

right... using a *teleport* (not a portal) is what i do, too...

right... you cannot use the quick menu on the space station... use the teleport to return to your freighter... then go down to the freighter landing bay and use the quick menu ship summon from there... if you cannot swap your ship while you are standing in the landing bay of your freighter, then something (you are doing?) is wrong... it works exactly like swapping star ships on the anomaly... it is the exact same mechanic...

that's why i don't have the freighter in the same system as the station, so when i teleport back the ships spawn on the landing pads for me and i only need to pick one and away i go back to a station to start scrapping.

as for the quick menu. it doesn't work period. i try to summon the ship and it says invalid landing location, both freighter and station.

It should work in the freighter and the anomaly. Its not supposed to work in the space station.

it doesn't, i can't tell you any more than this as i don't know any more than that.

Standing away from any landing pads, using the summon, the red shape of the ship shows up and no matter where i place it, it remains red. i click and it says as i mentioned above.
