...anyways...make sure you have the 'rebel star' mission active in the log before going into the galaxy map...and once in there that the course is set to 'current' mission, there should be a green line indicating the route to a star with the 'rebel star' mission icon on it.
Under a Rebel Star, the Settlement rescue (for your first settlement) and Dreams of the Deep all auto-update to a new galaxy if you sit on them until changing galaxies.
He probably just couldn't find where it was pointing in his previous galaxy. Then, when he jumped galaxies, it updated to the new one and he found that location.
IIRC green line shows the correct mission path.
