Is the multiplayer this broken ?
TLDR: Multiplayer sucks

Yesterday me and my friend tried playing multiplayer with already existing gamesaves and even after uploading bases we were unable to select each others bases in teleporter.

Containers are like separately instanced. We've started new game both, and played for an hour or so yesterday, it's unclear how it will reconnect today.

But reading online does not seem to have more recent information than 3-4 years ago.

Game has changed a lot in the last 3-4 years, but multiplayer hasn't. That old information is pretty much still accurate in regards to multiplayer specifics. Likely inaccurate in terms of any other gameplay information though.

if you are talking about the large cubical storage containers numbered 0 through 9, the ones you see, even if placed by someone else, are always your's... even if you haven't placed them yet... any that you place on a planet are the same as the ones you place on your freighter, too... call it "quantum storage" if you like...

and remember, MP in NMS is "playing solo together"...
Well, that's a bit disappointing. Especially now that we started standard game and have to follow same boring questline. Maybe in few more years they'll make more interesting MP. Thing is that I bought it just so I could play with my friend...

Never had any issues with multiplayer. Was playing multiplayer with friends yesterday without problem. Only once did I have to reconnect when my internet connection failed.
I just started the game and from the multiplayer screen and selected my friend on the No Man's Sky friends list. (we'd already exchanged friend codes). We are both playing in the same mode and all settings the same. No mods either.

About bases: There may be a possible delay having uploaded a base for it to be downloadable from the server but I never had any issue with that and simply restarted the game. It may help to be sure you have matching base settings in a group so you see the same objects at the same time.

I had this not being able to join a friends base even though:
1. He had uploaded the base
2. We were both friended and in a group

For us the solution was to go to the Anomaly, wait until my friend got there, then from the Anomaly teleporter under the Groups tab I could see my friends bases listed. Click on the one I wanted to go to and have it start downloading. Once it was downloaded I could portal to it and every one of his bases outside of the Anomaly teleporter (His bases then became reachable from normal teleporters)
Well it kinda works as we created new games and played together for a while. But doesn't change a fact that multiplayer sucks as wkitty42 said

So we ended up playing Valheim 42 hours already this week, theme is different, but at least multiplayer doesnt suck.

FWIW: NMS was originally intended to be single player... multiplayer was added only after there was a huge cry after release... at least there is some type of multiplayer for those that want to play the game with others in their vicinity... space is huge and you really shouldn't see others except on rare occasions and/or if you are in a highly populated area of the current galaxy...

I see it makes sense then. I did not research the game before purchasing. I've expected something Like Starbound with Frackin Universe mods(which I really like). Perhaps in couple more years multiplayer of NMS will be better.

I wouldn't count on it, NMS is 6 years old now and HG is working on a new game now. They say they'll continue supporting NMS but don't count on any major improvements IMHO.
