How to paint a spaceship, please tell me?!
How to paint a spaceship, please tell me?!!

There is no way, in game, to paint a starship. You can paint your freighter on the bridge of the freighter (after you spend nanites to unlock colors), you can paint your exocraft, you can paint your exosuit....but you can NOT paint your starship.

To get your starship in colors that you want you either have to spend time hunting down a system that has a ship (at least close to) the colors you want, or edit your save game with the save editor.

You find the same model in a different color or you don't.

I still find it extremly silly how we cannot change the paint job of ships. With all the tech we have, I mean not being able to change its shape/outer componnents etc ok fine thats alright understandable, but we should be able to slap a new coat of paint on it if we want. Its just silly, I mean I get why its like this, but still it just makes no sense.

Well hopefully Hello games will allow you to paint/customise your ship. A lot of us spend most of our time in it, it would really help us be invested into the game even more. Some of the games I love the most are the ones I can customise, ie make the character look like me or how I want it to look, be able to design my ship/armor/whatever. Even games i would normally hate and never buy I've loved just cos I can customise it.

Custiomisation, like options, is always good.

The save file actually does have the allocation for customization for ship painting, right next to the customization for the things you actually can customize in the game. And the game recognizes and reads the formatting if you manually edit the save file (raw JSON), leading to your ship having custom paint.
So basically, they have EVERYTHING programmed already for painting your ship. Except the User Interface to do it.

I think it kinda keeps the excitement alive in finding that perfectly gorgeous ship.

If they did add ship painting they would probably screw it up by leaving that one section of trim un-paintable... kinda like they did with freighters.

I prefer to keep the Easter egg hunt aspect of the game over custom painting ships. However, right now the only way to share or get a ship that has a colour that you like is to search the Reddit Forums where people share ships they find. I want to collect colour sets/designs from other ships when you dismantle them, so I can apply them to new ones I find. That would allow players to customize ships and maintain its Easter egg hunting aspect.

But there is no such thing. There are too many people with too many different tastes and not enough variety of ships. The only way to get the perfect ship colors is to customise it yourself.

You first pay 20 bucks to get a paint then go through 5 different menus to apply the paint to your ship and then lose the paint a couple of days later due to a bug

wait this isn't Star Citizen nvm :steammocking:

I seriously doubt customizing ships will ever be included. For a lot of people, finding the "perfect" ships is a big part of the game and they spend an enormous amount of gameplay hunting for them and networking to share spotting reports. Check out the NMS Coordinate Exchange Reddit. Being able to customize your ships vs. hunting throughout the known universe would ruin all of that.

That's a really good idea. Plus they could introduce another in-game token you'd have to grind to redeem to customize ships.

If you live long enough to experience it, perhaps.
