Save Editor Cannot Load Save Files
So, I've been marooned on the now infamous trap world of Bensavirgin. My friend and I started our saves together in multiplayer, as so many others have. The odd thing is, I was the host initially.

Anyways, I have read through the relevant threads, Shout out to Ǥɾᴧᴤʆᴧᵯᴧ for helping so many others with this problem and bringing them to the Save Editor. However, when I am attempting to locate my save files to begin the edit, the tool cannot read them. It appears to load partial data, and then fails. I am able to load into both SP and MP saves in-game.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

is your file open path something likes this:
\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\st_xxxxxxxxxxxx

^^

Do you keep your saves in the default path or did you choose a custom location? The SE will automatically look for the path that Gatun provided. Also, are you using the most recent version of the SE? I have run into issues in the past loading the JSON editor because of the age and size of my save file (Normal mode from 1.0).

Even though the SE backs up your save, I would recommend a manual backup anyways before you mess with it. Good luck.
i could try to look into your savefile if you can upload it somewhere

Thanks for the replies guys!

I do not have NMS installed on my C:\ drive, but that shouldn't matter given that the game saves in AppData. My saves are indeed in the default directory (or at least the files I am trying to load are in):

I updated Java (to 1.8.0_201). I did search for awhile hoping to find a more recent Save Editor, I have version 1.5.37 which appears to be most recent.

I found one topic on the SE's Github page with a matching error log, but the user who posted it was attempting to load old save files into the editor, which is peculiar. I did play NMS a long time ago; If the above directory contains outdated save files, I have no idea where the current ones could actually be. When starting the game in Visions, version 1.77, I had no old saves available in-game to load or convert, if that is even an option normally.

In Windows search or Windows Explorer type "%appdata%\HelloGames\NMS\"

Your saves are in the "st_xxxxxxxx" folder.

That is the directory I am trying to load from in the Save Editor. In the Save Editor, when I select File > Open File/Path, the UI hangs for a moment, and then instead of 'save2.hg', I see 'Slot 1 - [EMPTY]'. When selecting this file an error is displayed and logged in the Editor's logfile.

in the drop down above "Slot 1" is the path pointing to the save file folder? ("%appdata%\HelloGames\NMS\")

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but since it's not working right I'm not assuming anything.

Well, I appear to have figured this one out... I should have tried this much sooner. It appears the Save Editor was having trouble loading the file from a different drive.

Once I put the Save Editor's working directory into the \st_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx folder, It loaded the save with no trouble. I don't have much hands-on experience with java based progs. Sorry guys, thanks again for trying to help!

Glad you are back up and running.

Just want to reply to this real quick. I'm have a similar issue. When I click on the open icon and see my username my saves don't pop up so I can't select anything to save. Weird right? I can't select a save file. But I can click on the tools, "open folder" to open my save folder and everything.

You necro'd an old post. Also this issue has been known in experimental for some time as they changed saves on their end that leaves the save editor incompatible. And they usually wait for the changes to hit the normal build before updating the editor in case the change is reverted by Hello Games. Given the change JUST hit normal build today with this update, chances are high they've just not had time to update the editor to be compatible with whatever changes Hello Games have made. It's happened a couple times in the past and it'll sort itself out in time, but as of right now you can't save edit with any editor that's not been updated since about 14 hrs ago or so.

The game just had an update today which changed save file structure a bit. Save editors need to be updated. Until that happens, no one can load their saves in it (assuming they have updated their game)
