This game is an exploration/survival game.
The game is mostly catering to people who are naturally curious, for a great deal of the game experience is to explore the unknown, be it finding new life, odd planets/vistas, learning languages or ancient lore.
Apart from that, there is an unknown insentive to reach the center of the galaxy and there are multiple ways of doing that.
You'll need to upgrade your ship, suit and 'gun' for it, and there are 3 obvious ways of doing this: exploring/scavenging/mining, trading/mining and robbing/plundering (go all space pirate/vigilante-like ;)).
Next to that, there will be less obvious ways, like some sort of 'questing'. Although, these quests won't be marked with a question-mark and they won't let you just collect and complete when you want. They'll be events that you happen upon and if you don't know what to do, you'll probably fail ;)
These are some of the features we've seen, but if we can believe the PR, they're not even close to all there is ;)
EDIT: And all of this is what was mentioned by Sentinel as well :P All this information is from interviews with Sean Murray. Go, go Google? ;)
As far as the 'race to the center' goes,
I hope it's a black hole that eats you and your ship and spits
you out on the far fringe of the universe. Serve em right, lol.
And yes, I am also very interested in the universe lore.
However that sort of comes under 'exploration'
So you probably will see none of that if you're an ultra competitive
who 'wants to be the first to the center'
