Its a legitimate question from a novice.
If the mods/cheats dont use an app like CheatEngine you will be fine most likely.
Just be aware other game ant cheat software can treat software like CheatEngine more aggressively.
Ymmv.
Just ensure you download from reputable sites and understand what you are installing.

Modders are already making small fixes for this game and I for one I`m grateful for it.
While its not the best game in my libary right now, I don't want any bans on my record ya know?
Thank you guys for helping to answer.
Also keep in mind that mods might conflict with (future) updates/DLC.
Other then that you should be good (unless perhaps when you install a mod that automatically discovers and renames all planets in the universe for you, IOW mess with the online naming database, or any other MP-ish aspect the game has)
If you want you can allways run steam in offline mode - this way NMS will disconnect from Hello Games servers too but as this is no competetive game and dev talked about mods some time ago - I think its safe to run with mods. All my steam friends that own the game runs mods with no issues online.
The traffic for NMS has been exhaustively examined and the only thing it sends to the server is the discovery data. No player data is ever sent at all.
So HG has no idea you are even running mods.
Anti cheat is quite common with ubisoft single player games.
But those are the exception.
It's kind of tragic if you think about it. Assassin's creed syndicate has more anti cheat measures in it than the division does and that's an actual multiplayer game.
