Fallout 4, genre defining? LOOOOOOOOOOL.
If you happen to mean the worst review scores, then "Day One : Garry's Incident" is famous for being one of the worst games on steam and has 19% approval rating. But I'm sure there are games with an even worse score.
The game is a niche game with the highests sales for the year, of course people are going to hate AND love it. The review numbers are not particularly bad given the number of sales and the type of gameplay NMS brings to the table.
I find the game satisfying to play, maybe a bit pricey at 60 dollars but given I already have 50 ish hours of gameplay in I am obviiously getting my money's worth.
Yes the MP part is upsetting to me but overall the game is pretty much what I expected AND I expect NMS to grow with patches, DLS etc into a much bigger game.
I'm glad I waited for that one to release before I considered buying it. I liked Sim City 4 and put quite a number of hours into it, but the new one is just bad. Even with the network problems fixed, it's bad.
Personally I would say Fallout 4, not because its objectively worse, as thats mostly all subjective, but because it confirms to me that the Fallout franchise that got me into gaming (Fallout 2 was the first game I truely played) is dead, and won't ever come back so long as Bethshit controls it, and I highly doubt Obsidian will come back after they got shafted over Fallout NV's reviews. That and I thought its was terrible in general, I spent 100+ hrs attempting to convince myself that I like the game and that I didn't hate it, saying to myself that it would get better with mods/DLC/patches, I wish I could take it all back and just refund the game and forget it ever existed, I was an idiot for thinking I could ever like it.
I at least don't feel that way with NMS, so thats a plus in my book at least.
You cannot seriously be calling No Man's Sky a "niche game". It's an overwhelmingly popular $60 Sony game for multiple platforms. It was never marketed to a niche crowd - it was supposed to be for everyone, including explorers, scientists, traders, fighters, etc.
It's niche genre. How much money it's made isn't a factor in it being anything less than niche. Star Citizen is in a niche genre too and it's done ok.
Though honestly this topic is kind of pointless as like other users have stated such scores rarely mean anything about a game truth is whether a game is good or not is completely subjective based on the player.
But all those games you mentioned are more challenging than NMS and Fallout 4. Also, kids have rich parents unlike me supporting myself through college. x_x
