Why NMS is already worth my money. 60 year old father is now a NMS explorer. - By Reddit User california_king
So I bought the game on launch night with a buddy who lives across the country. Played all night, all the next day, and can't wait to nerd out all weekend. Well, yesterday my father calls me up and says he wants to come over to my apartment cause we haven't really spent time together in a couple weeks. I told him better yet, fire up the bbq grill and I'll bring a few steaks over and I have this awesome game I want to show him. He agrees. So I get off work, head home pack my system up and bring it over to his house.

While he cooks I set up the game and start playing. Mind you, my dad is a huge Star Trek and Star Wars fan. He saw Star Wars opening night in 1977 and fell in love. He comes in to see me play this game and is just absolutely captivated. I explain the game to him and everything you can do and he asks to take the reins. I give him a quick run down on the controls and exit to continue the bbqing. I tell him to just stay In the system I was in as it had 6 planets and few moons. More than enough for him to play around with.

Fast forward about 4 hours, his steak is cold and he has completely taken over my ps4. He doesn't want to give up the controller lol. He spent the whole 4 hours in that one system. He named every planet, discovered and named dozens of species, built me 4 warp cells, he went nuts lol.
After convincing him to give up the controller, he runs back to his room, hands me $500 cash and tell me to bring him a ps4 with the game. I run to Best Buy, and do just that. My pops has been up since last night playing NMS and I have to keep calling him to see if he's ok lol. Trying to get him to sleep. I talked to him 10 min ago and he's STILL playing.

My dad is a retired school principle and has a lot of spare time and cash. I love NMS for this reason. It brought life back into my father. The look in his eyes when I flew into space from a planet gave me chills. This is the power of NMS. Don't know how long he will be addicted but it seems as though he's in for the long run. He said he's always wanted a game that can make him feel like a space explorer. NMS is more than a game, this is life, inspiration, childhood dreams come to fruition, freedom.

EDIT: So me and pops just made plans to hang all weekend. Girlfriend isn't too happy about it but who cares? Love my pops. We're gonna set up 2 tvs in his garage and nerd out together from Friday night to Sunday morning. He is completely addicted to the game. As am I :) I hope Sean Murray reads this post and realizes the magic his game is creating.

This is not mine, I simply thought it'd be worth sharing in a Sea of negativity surrounding the game in its current state.

I cannot wait until tomorrow!

It's too bad he doesn't know there are so many better games and that he's actually playing trash.

Kewl story bro. Seriously. We tried to get our dad to play Halo on the original xbox with us but it was hopeless. I love hearing of families gaming together. Closest I got was playing L4D with one of my brothers and going on two lan parties with the other. Tried to recreate that by buying a 360 a few years back for 4 player couch coop but they couldnt get into games like Castle Crashers.

For those who have never played a video game, sure. Ignorance is bliss.

Thats a great story, because I feel the same excitement, ... I love sci fi games, i love space sims, Action, Strategy, whatever.
The Idea of exploring a whole universe is just perfect for me.

People who hate on that game are just jealos, that people can be so excited about a game and they just ... cant ... because they are consuming the same games over and over with slightly better graphic every year. Let them burst out in negativity on these forums, maybe it helps them, like a relief, else they would become depressed.

Happy to help guys, keep the negativity flowing into the forums, we understand you and wish you all the best.

It's actually a pretty good game for new gamers since it's easy to learn and pretty stress free.
The main reason for the bad reviews is that people compare it to other stuff they'd played and what the hoped it would be.
For your first video game it's got lots to do, is nice an colorful, and you overlook the flaws since you don't know what most people expect these day.

If he's a big Star Wars fan you might want to watch for Battlefront to go on sale. It's been out for long enough for the base game to be cheap and if you can get it on sale, just the tutorial levels give you decent value and are easy to learn.
I don't really like multiplayer but have spent quite a bit of time on the speederbike chase and hoth missions. Check out youtube videos on the tranining missions if you want to see if it would appeal to him.

Ratchet and Clank also has pretty simple gameplay and is cheap.

If you also signed him up for PS plus Rebel Galaxy is free this month and the first episode of Life is Strange is free now.

Once you're looking for something less Sci-fi oriented, Diablo might be worth looking at. It's got simple gameplay, lots of loot to collect, and can be played coop on 1 machine if you've got an extra controller. I've seen it on sale quite a few times.

This lets him try a variety of games without spending a lot of cash before he knows what appeals to him.

Uncharted 4 or The Last of Us would both be good story based action games once he gets used to gaming.

If he's a real big space enthusiast, you might also want to look into Kerbal Space Program. Watch lots of videos before making a decision on that one though since the learning curve can be pretty brutal. It's much slower and more technical than NMS, but sucess is more rewarding too. Try to find PS4 specific videos to get an idea of the interface quirks on that platform.
I really enjoyed this story, it was a really nice break from all the drama. I would like to hear more stories like this.

The world doesn't revolve around your opinion, but whatever floats your boat kiddo.
