That said, the game doesn't let you claim a crashed ship if you don't have any free ship slots. So...are you sure you aren't mistaken about losing your explorer? Or did you accidentally 'exchange' ships rather than just claim the free one?

You can back up and restore either the saved files themselves or the entire directory regularly however you'd like (and later delete/replace the files/dir to restore a previous version). If you use Steam Cloud Saves, it will tell you there is a difference and will then overwrite the cloud version with the version that is on your computer (I think you get to choose which save version to use).
Correct.
I use a program called Game Backup monitor [github.com]which automatically makes a zip file that backs up the save games every time you exit the game. It also lets you specify how many total backups to keep around (so it will auto-delete older zip files beyond that setting).
Very useful, and it works for all games, not just NMS. I'm lazy, anything that automates doing something is good to me.
I did not know this. Thank you very much
Steam does daily backup saves also, wouldnt that be the same as what you do?
Steam does not do daily backups, unless you are talking about Steam Cloud syncing, which isn't a daily thing...it's a constant thing whenever you play the game.
Considering Steam Cloud is known to occasionally cause loss of a save file entirely (in many games) most of us do not have it enabled.
I have accidentally done that before, but I never lost a ship as I have quickly gone back to where I left it and reclaimed it. Also I also back up the save file all the time so even if I forgot where I made the exchange, I can always reload a prior save. Also, at every significant stop, I take a screen shot with the coordinates, so its also easy to return to such sites. It's a good idea whenever you want to permanently record where you are to:
(1) screenshot while your scanner is running, - that gives the local coordinates
(2) screenshot the galactic portal coordinates: go into photo mode, then use either your computer's screenshot mode, or STEAM's if you are using that. You can't actually use the game's photo mode picture as it strips the lettering off the picture, (so it looks good), - you need to use the local screenshot hotkey to take the picture.
yeah I bumped this year old post ♥♥♥♥ you
