Medium dinos = Creature eggs (at many planets)
Striders = tall eggs (you will give your first 100 born Gek to find)
RNGeezus is not screwing you over, because the way the game works isn't based off of RNG for what you find on planets. The entire galaxy is already pre-set, based on a seed value, so we all see the same planets and same creatures. Those eggs gotta be out there along the expedition route somewhere.
I'll post here if I find them again. I'm about to start the game up and go back to it.
If you need coords, someone will follow up.

Just finished baking the cake required.
hi there are two type of eggs I know of.
1. you can get "small eggs" from feeding some animals
2. you need to make a creature "a companion" by feeding it 1st then interacting with it an adopting it and wait something like 20+ hours before it will gestate and be ready to lay the hatchable Big egg you're looking for and bear in mind your required to get 3 eggs at some point. you will get an option in the creature interaction menus to get the egg once the creature is ready to lay it and you just pick it up once laid.
also in your companion menu options your best to get at lest 3 companions quickly as possible as you have to wait about 20+ hours for each animal to gestate an egg.
you can call a creature right to you from the companion menu but animals need to be in the right environment in order to lay eggs too.
There's are 3 different kinds of eggs required by the expedition, tall eggs, creature eggs, and giant eggs. They are all food ingredients. Another step of the expedition requires you to bake a cake, and the eggs are useful for that step as well.
There's no such thing as "small eggs" in the game, unless you were just referring to their size, and not their actual in-game name.
hi aw fs
One of the expedition goals does require the type of egg you were talking about, from a companion, as well. And then for you to take it to the anomaly to sequence it.
BUT, the expedition actually gives you a companion at the start, and it is ready to lay an egg the moment you begin the expedition. The planet the expedition starts you on is also the right type of planet for it...so you can get that egg immediately.
That helped, thanks.
However, the trick to it is in its theme: 'Exobiology'. You're supposed to be studying the various forms of life in the universe, including the lifeforms on planets.
So relax. Check out a few different planets... Say hi to all the critters. Hang out with all the lifeforms for a bit. Hug them goodbye when you leave. Take it easy.
If one mission is being difficult for you, stop and do a different one. They tend to solve themselves out together as most of them are intentionally related.
None of the missions are actually difficult, unless you make them difficult. That's what I learned from doing this expedition the first time.
