maybe . but with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ performance .the 840 is not a GPU for gaming but for watching movie and every day task all nvidia gpu are labeld in some sort like ths :

6xx -> 7xx ->8xx ->9xx first number is sort of a generation, the other too numbers indicate the performance, x10 -> x50 are gpu's for every day task like surfing the internet and watching movies, x60 -> x95 are gaming gpu's that are build primarily for gaming .

so that means you have a gpu meant for watching movies and surfe the internet that is lacking on generation behind. so i would personaly not have to high hopes. it might work, but you wont get any good performance in t he game, or it will be unplayable.

seems its close or better than a ps4 so optimization of the game is the only question. Maybe wait few days for people to report or just buy and try long as you don't go over an hour of play you can refund.

no, the geforce 840m is several times weaker than the minimum required gtx 480.

I have an i5 4210U and an 840m, just because the minimum requirements are better than what we have usually means ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... MGS V Phantom Pain had requirements that were 315% better than my laptop, turns out I could run the game 45-60 FPS on high settings (AA off) at 1366x768. It all depends on how the game will be optimized.

true. just means you will running the game at worse performance than the devs thought would be acceptable to players. if you are willing to accept worse performance, you can usually use stuff below minimum requirements. VERY few people are willing to accept playing a game below 1080p now. if you are, you are likely to get away with playing many games which have higher requirements.

If I recall correctly the required card was a GT420 if you have a GT840 M I think you're more than fine.

gtx 980 is far more powerful than needed. it will eat this game for breakfast, assuming you have an appropriate cpu.
