cadmium drive
I've got this and isn't it supposed to warp with no fuel? The warp fuel seems to be still being used, so should I dismantle the normal hyperdrive?

You can't dismantle the hyperdrive, the cadmium drive is just an upgrade

Not sure what you mean by warping without fuel, the color drives just allow you to get to different color star systems

Never seen that, it has never been the case.

Now you have a FREIGHTER, just know that your starship (the small one you fly and land on planets, etc) will use ONE warp cell PER JUMP

While on the opposite, ONE warpcell of your FREIGHTER will last for 5 jumps

That's about warp cell efficiency, if you think you are short on them.

Also your freighter can jump into ANY star system color without any upgrade, so technically you don't need the cadmium / indium / emeril drives.

Now like everyone out there I still usually keep the indium one installed, but most of the time I warp to other systems with my freighter for various reasons.

Depends on if you have hyperdrive upgrades. My explorer has 6 S-class hyperdrive modules and I warp constantly and can't remember the last time I recharged it. :P With upgrades your ship will become more fuel efficient + be able to warp much farther than the freighter. But otherwise it's good to use the freighter, especially if you need to get to the other color star systems before you have the indium drive.

As starsheeb mentioned, the cadmium drive allows you to warp your spaceship to red stars where cadmium is a common material.

Similarly, an emeril drive will allow you to warp your spaceship to green stars where emeril is common. It will also allow you to warp to red stars.

An indium drive will allow you to warp your spaceship to blue stars where indium is common. It will also allow you to warp to red and green stars. This is why most people just use indium drives. But you need emeril to construct it.

To get emeril without an emeril or cadmium drive, you warp your freighter to a green star, and then mine what you need from one of the planets.

Ofc I spoke as a flat rate, on "starters" because many will probably have the freighter available to them before they have 3 S class upgrades for an S class explorer ;-).

Then later, you don't even care how much ressources it will cost you to warp.

Yep, I got the free freighter early on and when I saw that you don't need any color drives I never bothered building them and always warped with my freighter. Then I realized your ship can be way superior with hyperdrive upgrades and bought those (at that point I had a good explorer) and got the indium drive.

Thank you all, I didn't realise that I could use my freighter to go into space especially as the one I 'won' is small and there is only 1 frigate in the group so far. I wanted to use it for making money but was thwarted when it explores on it's own by it's damage. Does the starship go with the freighter on the space trips and how do you drive the freighter into space? Also does the freighter land on the planets or is that left for the starship/frigate?

Your starship(s) go with the freighter when it warps (so do your frigates). The freighter hyperdrive is more econmical than your beginning starship's as you can make several jumps on one warp cell. As you are entering the command center on your freighter, the warp controls are on the right of the circular console, directly across from your navigator. You can't land your freighter on a planet though crashed NPC ones are littered through out the galaxy. Seems like you can find several on every planet.
