Discussion climate here vs. Reddit
I'm wondering what you clever types might think about the disparity in tone between dialogue here vs at NMS on reddit. I own that this is purely opinion: it seems that while there are certainly posts criticizing the game, marketing, etc. at the subreddit, the tone here is comparatively brutal. Thoughts?

Tbh, I have only ambled into the two forums recently. Maybe in the last week or so. I gather that you are highlighting a shift in tone at the reddit over time? I don't mean to suggest that my observations are scientific by any means. From a purely anecdotal perspective, I sensed a marked difference in climates between the two and just wondered if anyone noticed the same and had any thought on why.

Maybe one important reason is that to discuss here you need a Steam profile.
That makes you a customer on this platform.

It seems legit to state that there is little to zero influence from people with other intentions then the intention to get what they want only for themselves.

I think you are saying is that as this is a direct marketplace, the proximity of the dialogue to that transaction makes it more like to stimulate consumer protest? People paid money here, feel however they feel about the game, and voice that sentiment strongly. And maybe the subreddit's distance from the transaction makes it a somewhat calmer place. Something like that?

Not going to happen because Sean/Hello Games have NEVER given concrete information. Thus, educated and rational discussions can never happen. Opinions fly here because they can only be bounced around with other opinions, there are no facts to smack them down. The only facts we have is the $60 worth of gameplay that was sold to us and people are obviously NOT happy with it.

The state of this forum is Sean Murray's fault.

I agree with you to some extent. I believe some skillful participation from HG could go a ways toward reducing the wild conjecture and the resultant vitriol. And I wish they would speak!

I believe you overreach when you day that the state of this forum is SM's fault. After all, while his silence is having an impact, WE chose how to react. We are the ones who create the kind of ecosystem in which we choose to discuss. Do you think there is any way we could make this a more pleasant place to debate?

Sorry I respond to a question you asked to someone else.

What goes wrong imho, only for this game that I know of, is the forum structure itself is not logic. It was easier to have landing page with gameplay discussion and a subforum for technical/refund issues.

Most of the posts are refund related and it was better they arranged a community manager from HG/Sony to merge those posts in the correct part of the forum. Not to censor them.

Now we have the landing page, the main page and the sepearte subforums, but most of the visitors only land on the mainpage.
If you scroll back a few pages or all of them, you can see the volentuur mods of Steam did an incredible job to manage what was already totally wrong at start. That is my opinion.

That is one side of the coin. The other side is that someone who wants to do damage to the developer/Steam and or the game don't have a platform here.
Reddit is moderated to hell and back. Here you get the occasional visit from an power tripping fanboy mod that bans anyone criticizing frequently. Also they'll lock threads without reason and ban you when you have to make another post to ask why.

Of course reddit is censored like crazy, it's a west coast company that panders to SJWs who get offended over everything and whine because their feelings get hurt over you saying mean things, like reminding them what the actual definitions of words are when they try to make them up on the spot to try and justify them being offended.

Reddit is heavily censored and is a good place to go if you want to... look at screenshots. You don't have to search hard to find the same tone, though. Any thread involving critique is booming with hate.
so why are you basing your arguments on a post by a guy who did not want to turn it into a hate fest if redit is a screenshot heaven ? There is an agenda on this forum to destroy no man sky regardless of the content in or not in , if everything was in a stated, it stil would face this kind of attack, competitors what it dead
reddit has alot more moderators or at least more active ones
then again theres just as many games as there are forums on steam, so its kinda hard to monitor every single last one every single minute of every waking day

After the way the game was laaunched with bugs and people reactions went nuts and in the past Sean Murray had death threats. In light of the above SM just gave up on making statements because it would have a life on its own and it be twisted out of proportion and people just got more angier and fanatical. If your consumers are threatening to kill you for delaying the game and when you do release it with bugs and all, people hit the roof with vile attacks and a campaign of hate and harrassment at the developers. I would stay away from people till i fixed the game and let it calm down.

Please note SM/hello games and most of all sony who has the most know how and experience in this area have made a mess of the laurnch. The pc game sholuld of not been released as it was but it was, however SM and hello slience et al on this understandable

I think you need to take off the tinfoil hat my friend. The "hate" generated in these forums is from people who spent $60 on something they feel cheated by. It's one thing to waste money on an EA game you take a chance on but it's another thing entirely to spend money on something you're told is one thing and it turns out to be something far less. Sure, refund threads with 50 hours logged is rediculous but the sentiment is here and it's not going anywhere.

That's why I say the state of these forums is Sean Murray's fault. You don't sell a product for a AAA price under false pretenses and expect a rational reaction when the game does not deliver. On top of that you have many people with single digit hours logged in getting rejected for a refund. These tactics scream "bait 'n switch" and since Steam is hosting false trailers and screenshots while profiting from the sale of this game, which sold well, you are going to get A LOT of hate.

It's that simple, really. Reddit, on the other hand, has and always will be the fanboy sanctuary. They finally got the game they have been hyping over for years and they don't care if it's a shadow of its advertised self. BUT, someone needs to tell them to start slashing away at the "game information" section because much of that stuff is not in the game.

Think of Reddit like a terrorist training camp. Driven by groupthought,an agenda to push their beliefs and an extreme disconnect from reality, anything that doesnt follow in lockstep with their views gets suppressed or wiped out. They just use downvotes and moderation instead of bullets and beheadings. Same end goal though. Total conformity and the elimination of free thought.

I use to wonder when I was younger how the worst human atrocities could have come to fruition, how large groups of people could ever get to the point where they would all collectively give up their ability to reason as individuals and blindly follow a group towards some moronic point of view. And then I found Reddit and wondered no longer.
Steam forums are less heavily moderated so of course it's more of a bar-room brawl here.
To those who think reddit is a haven for SJWs that is heavily censored. Are you out of your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ minds?

What you describe is specific to that particular subreddit and this particular forum.

Some games have a more vocal main subreddit, and a heavily censored Steam forum instead.
So you are suggesting that it's nothing inherent to either forums, but more unique to...what? The game?

A striking example would be starbound. The rage isnt real in the steam forums simply, because there is a moderator, who locks up all raging or critizising threads. Starbounds problem got several: A shady developer and serious game problems. Im not saying you cant enjoy the game with friends without any of this knowledge, but sadly thats another sci fi game with big wasted potential. Companies just handle their babies different and that indeed affects direct or indirect the performance of the games!

So community behaviour has several sources: specific audience( fps vs rts etc etc), specific developer or publisher ( shady , honest , big , indie), also ofc seasonal changes ( people got more time to post rubbish in holiday seasons).

Also on a side note im just a spectator, i never played NMS and i cant say if its bad or not.
But because of the negative press and such i got cautious of course.
Im just curious about the media buzz and raging in general and consumer awareness. So i mostly dont take any sides :p

No, I'm saying that each subreddit and each forum has a different management style.

It's not "reddit" vs this forum, it's that subreddit vs this forum. You can make your own NMS subreddit, and manage it differently, censoring or not censoring whatever you want.

Honestly I am confused as to which one you are saying is worse.
