I now get this opening error message when starting up NMS^

My OS is Windows 10: 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2130)

"If on Win10+ please ensure NMS.exe and Steam.exe are not running in compatibility mode"
Done and Done. Steam was in compatibility mode last week, but I fixed it. Still no joy.

NMS still thinks I'm running an old OS:
"Debug details for HG: OS version reported as 6.2"

Any other executables I can check for compatibility mode?

Hmm, very odd. I don't know if this will help 100% but it's worth checking out. The official Steam FAQ lists the steamwebhelper.exe as a culprit you might want to check: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/443B-C1B8-0998-C02A

I'm not quite sure why the effects of compatibility mode would be lingering. One thing you could do is nuke Steam entirely and re-install it. Obviously be sure to not delete your game library, but Steam itself is not actually that big of a program and it's very easy to re-install.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked and steamwebhelper.exe is not in compatibility mode.

However the problem is fixed. Here was my mistake: when fixing the compatibility mode last week, I stopped and started Steam. But not a real restart because it was still in my sys tray. Its not enough to simply close out the steam window. I have to right-click on the sys tray icon and exit steam properly. Upon restart, my OS is correctly reported.

A PC off/on again would have also worked:

Haha, classic. Well glad it's fixed.

There's also the menu bar at the top of the Steam main window, click on "Steam", and the bottom of this menu has "Exit", which does the same as the Exit in the tray icon right-click menu.

I just found the same problem giving an error when I was on windows 10, for anyone else with the similar problem that can't seem to find the solution, my search led me to this post nearly on accident.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CODVanguard/comments/rbss0n/pc_client_thinks_i_have_windows_8/

Turned out for me, Steam itself was in compatibility mode and that made it throw the error for some reason. Maybe cuz it was running it through steam to launch it I don't know, either way I turned compatibility mode off for Steam's own Steam.exe in the steam folder and it launched.

So if you've tried everything else and not that make sure that steam itself isn't running in compatibility mode as well as the main No Mans Sky .exe itself. Might fix your issue.
Best of luck and shoot for the stars ✨
