Experimental Branch 02/11
Hello Everyone,

First of all, thanks so much to everyone who has already spent time playing No Man's Sky and letting us know about any issues you've experienced.

Steam users are able to opt-in to the Experimental Branch, where we have pushed a patch to address some problems. We'll be rolling out these fixes to other platforms as soon as possible.

To play in Experimental, right-click on No Man's Sky from the Steam library page and select "Properties". Among the available tabs will be the "BETAS" tab. Enter "3xperimental" in the textbox and press "CHECK CODE", then select it from the dropdown menu.

The patch notes are as follows:

Experimental Branch 04/11
  • Fixed an issue that caused the non-functional technology warning to be displayed twice for blocked slots.
  • Fixed an issue that could appear to present the freighter inventory as valid when no freighter was owned.
  • Fixed an issue that caused invalid text to appear in some journey milestone guidance missions.
  • Fixed an issue that caused unpurchaseable slots to flash as selected despite the ship or multi-tool in question having reached the max inventory size for its class.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the numbers in the inventory UI to be too large when playing in 4K resolutions.
  • Improved the information given on OS compatibility warnings.

Experimental Branch 03/11
  • Plaque interactions will no longer loop back to the first piece of history for that planet's race after completing every interaction.
  • Abandoned building interactions will no longer loop back to the beginning of the first story after completing every interaction.
  • Players joining a friend's game directly from the frontend but without a valid save slot will now have the option to customise their difficulty settings.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause invalid text to appear in various mission information fields when several Planetary Drop Pod missions were active at the same time.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause all planetary Drop Pod missions in the same system to complete when loading a save where one had been recently completed.
  • Fixed an issue that clamped the craftable amount for an item at the size of its current stack - crafting amounts can now be adjusted up to the current free inventory space.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some UI elements to overlap the bottom of the inventory screen.
  • Fixed a number of issues that could cause the shortcut button to take players directly to a newly unlocked guide entry to fail to work correctly.
  • Fixed a number of issues that could cause inventory numbers to spill outside of their icon in particular languages.
  • Fixed a rare issue that could cause invalid items to be awarded from derelict freighter containers.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the wrong inventory to be increased when unlocking new slots.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause some journey milestone guidance missions to become stuck in a loop.
  • Fixed inventory readability issues caused the background to be too transparent in VR.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the shortcut button to take players directly to a newly discovered mineral/plant/creature to fail to work correctly.
  • The shield strength, hull strength, and combat manoeuvrability of hostile starships now scales correctly with the space combat difficulty setting.
  • Fixed an issue that could allow players to interact with hidden inventory items while using the expanded inventory.
  • Fixed a rare issue that could leave some Multi-Tools with unremovable broken technology after that technology was repaired.
  • The non-functional companion summoning options have been removed from the starship Quick Menu.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the Stasis Device and the Fusion Ignitor crafting steps to spill beyond the edges of the screen.
  • Fixed a collision issue affecting some Alloy door parts.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the living frigate "Feed" options to appear when talking to standard frigate captains aboard your freighter.

  • Fixed a number of visual glitches that could occur while using the Appearance Modifier.
  • Fixed a number of rendering issues affecting Oculus/Meta VR headsets.
  • The visual quality of FSR 2's Ultra Performance mode has been increased.
  • Fixed a number of particle flickering issues in VR.

  • Fixed a rare hang that could occur when summoning the Space Anomaly using a hotkey.
  • Fixed a crash related to playing custom ByteBeat tracks.

Experimental Branch 02/11
  • Story summaries for the various NPC base specialists have been added to the Collected Knowledge page of the information portal.
  • The Living Ship now uses the correct inventory labels.
  • Fixed a number of issues that could cause inventories to be scaled or scroll incorrectly.

  • Fixed an issue that could scramble information important to modders.
  • Fixed a number of memory issues related to FSR 2.
  • Fixed a number of multiplayer game invite issues that affected Xbox platforms.
  • Fixed a PC-only issue that could cause network settings to be unavailable without explanation.

As always, thank you to all players who use Experimental and take the time to report any issues you encounter.

Please note there is the possibility that experimental builds may introduce new issues that haven't been caught in test. We'd like to recommend that all players back up their save files, by making a local copy of the st_[userid] folder found here: %appdata%\HelloGames\NMS\

Note that we don't anticipate any issues here. However, performing your own backups could mean the difference between resuming play immediately, or waiting for the next patch.

If you decide to opt out of experimental and return to the main branch, we strongly recommend resuming from a backed-up save from the main branch, rather than taking an experimental branch save back to main, which may cause unexpected behaviour.

Feedback and reports of new bugs/issues being found on Experimental are welcome, so please reply to this thread or submit a ticket to https://hellogames.zendesk.com/ with the phrase "Steam Experimental" in the ticket title. If you are running any mods for the game, please list them along with your bug report.

Wow, you rock
"Fixed an issue that could scramble information important to modders."

I'm still impressed by the speed and regularity with which HG roll out new builds. I'm struggling to think of any other developer that can match them (especially for a game that is about six years old!). Much appreciated!

Add Roomscale support for VR. Let HUD and everything related to that direction follow the head. Let it play comfortably in 360 degree mode. I understand that VR was made mainly for PSVR with its limitations, but the PC does not have these limitations.
Please. It's the little things. Just pay attention to it and take some time to improve the VR version. Or do we have to wait for the PSVR 2 release for that? Or will the gameplay on PSVR 2 without the limitations of PSVR 1 still remain confined to 180 degree seated mode?
I want to play No Man's Sky freely in VR. Free to spin and go in any direction without constantly aligning the HUD to my direction... because a lot of things are tied to that direction, the shield, the jet jump, the various effect sprites are aimed towards the HUD and not on the direction of looking. Please.

I hope that one day the developers will hear.... 😢

I hope this will be one of the final updates for experimental before you push us back to Live mode again... Just saying that all my saves are in experimental and cant go back until Live mode is matching what is on this testing side.

And for so few fixes this time, the update sure is large.

I have high hopes that they hide somewhere a new Expedtion inside the update... pls Sean make it real. I would even rerun the very first ones to have finally all the goodies. (without savegame editing)

"Fixed a number of memory issues related to FSR 2."
This has been really annoying, the game basically leaks 200 MB of VRAM with every alt-tab when FSR 2 is on, and eventually slows down to a crawl and crashes.
Took me a while to figure out what is happening. Hope it is resolved and now I can alt-tab as many times as I need without having to restart the game.

Hahaha I already updated only to now get a sign saying that Multiplayer no longer supports windows 8.1. A little sign of 6gb to tell me that. HG you can go to hell I won't play this game anymore.

"Story summaries for the various NPC base specialists have been added to the Collected Knowledge page of the information portal." I've been asking for this once since 4.0 launched. Thanks guys! Now I just hope we get an 'all read' button. ;)

Ill be stoked if they just bring back the previous Expeditions like last year around this time that I missed! If they come out with a new expedition after that Id be putting in more time in NMS again that at work lol

Please Hello Games do something to correct the Stellar Extractors getting wiped when you move your freighter! It's totally ok that the materials they produce are tied to the specific system, but their cargo should not get wiped once produced, otherwise they are pretty useless.
Thank you.

You can actually check for Expeditions in each new update build. File you want to look at is called SEASON_DATA_CACHE.JSON. It opens with Notepad. Right up at the top the current one says "SeasonId":12,. This would be Polestar, still. (Seasons 5-8 were the reruns last year). So, when you get pushed a file with 13 in it, you'll know that there's an Expedition either coming or already on. That file is on your C: drive, one level down from the directory with all your savegames... were you interested in making manual backups while you're there.

Yea, worst update ever? Multiplayer STILL doesn't exist and now it says that i have windows 7.1/8.0 and it's not supported but I'm running windows 11 with all the latest updates. good job with the game.

Thank you HG for your prompt and continuous updates.
So great to see you're always ironing out issues, and developing new things.

Tech slots aren't being freed up after repairing, is this a known issue??

Seems more like a Windows issue on your end than a game issue to me.
