ENDURANCE - Anyone else not liking the new scanner room on a freigher ?
I really like the new Endurance Update so far. HG did a great job again. But there is one feature, that i really don't like, although a lot of people are praising it. This is the scanner room on a freighter. If you visit a new star system you can just scan and discover as well as upload all planets at once without actually visiting them with you starship and put a foot on the ground.

Yes, you can still do that, but you don't need to. It was a very rewarding and core element of the game, that you actually need to visit a planet and explore to claim your discovery. This results in endless hours of just exploring to get all planets on a system being discovered. And some planets in some systems are discovered by different people. That will all be gone, since everyone can claim all planets at once and just jump from system to system.

As mentioned before, you can still do the manual exploring, but since you don't need to the rewarding element of this is totally gone.

It's okay to have a scanner room, but i think you still need to land on a planet to claim your discovery. Why not having the scanner room scan the systems and then you can pulse drive into orbit with your freighter and go on your ship to land ?

The scanner room quickly became nothing but a center-piece. It's like the hub of the main floor of my freighter. A marker I use to know where I'm at but that's it. I never used it more than once. I scan planets as I go from my starship exploring one then the other and them being undiscovered is usually how I know it's next on my list without having to open my discoveries tab.
Scanner room is fantastic quality of life.

I explore a lot, it does not take away my ability to go explore if I want to anyway. If I want to get all those bonus nanites for wildlife, then I will be wandering planets for awhile with or without the scanner.

Also it's just simply a pain in the ass to fly around the gigantic mother of all planets next to the space station just to see all the planets on occasion.

You don't have to use it though.

yes, of course. But that is not the point. If you take away the need to do something to get a reward, it takes away a core feature of the game. It may be hard to explain to everyone, but for me this does not feel right. Well, nothing we can do about it anyway, since everyone is praising that feature and i doubt that HG will even notice that a few people have a different opinion on that.

Yes, i would agree, that pulse driving from planet to planet can become a bit annoying at times. So the idea of the freighter being able to pulse drive into orbit quickly would solve that issue, but you still have to land on a planet to claim your discovery. It's hard to explain, i know, but for me the easy way to just discover all systems at once without putting any effort in it, take something away from the game. I may be the only one, who feels that way, so that's okay of course.

I agree that the scanner room is a fantastic quality of life feature.
I also agree that, in regards to a more co-existing universe, it would be better to not couple the room to claiming the planets as well. Having planets in a system that were discovered by various people breathes some life into the universe. (Someone could argue that exactly this would work against the lore and the initial goal, but since multiplayer is and was getting more love over time, this one argument could be dismissed, too.)

Scanning all planets with one click - yes.
Claiming planets just when you actually landed on a planet - yes.
This would be my preferred way, too.

I have finally found a whole new joy of actually USING my freighter! I actually use the main console, upgraded my drives, warp from system to system, run to my scanner room and scan the whole system, hop over to the space station, check for goodies - head on down to any planets that looked enticing - warp back over to the capitol ship and keep going.

It's a massive improvement that completely adds to the game. I still use my ship to go and explore everything. It's the person that sets the rules, not the game. This was simply an incredible new addition that opened up new reasons to use my freighter for something besides a 'tug boat' ... tug it along ... call it in whenever I need resources or a quick getaway. That's all it was really good for before. Sure, dress it up, get some stuff from missions, but honestly - did you use it for much else? lol

No, this is an optional quality of life improvement. Some people may use it, some may not. It is not a requirement. Where it helps me, is that I can sweep a system when I enter it and focus only on the planets I care about instead of scanning each individually and landing on them.

It doesn't take away a core feature of the game, just because you don't need to land on a planet anymore doesn't mean it limits exploration.

its only the planets you discover the rest fauna etc you do have to land for so dont see the problem
as others have said its optional
and the galaxies are huge so still dont get what the problem is :steammocking:

The scanner room is an OPTION. Nobody is forcing you to build one. Problem solved.

LOL. Apparently great minds think alike. Didn't see your post until just after I posted mine.

I love the ability to see what each of the planets has to offer, so that I can optimize my time in the system. I was, however, shocked when I got discovery credit by using the scanner rather than by "boots on the ground". I don't really care for that. Rather than a scanner on-board, I would have preferred to have an information board on the space station that told me about all of the planets.

It would be cool to have some terminals dotted about space stations or at a hub on the Anomaly you might use your Atlas Pass or Illegal Passport or something to gain access and then view some secret information about a destination before deciding to head there unprepared.

Even if it was just reading the comments players have left on any particular planet using the communications stations. Scrolling through them might be fun and amusing 'red herrings' that may give some clues about a planet if it is dangerous or not. I wouldn't want to idle too long at an information panel. But there might even be actual scrolling info data about a planet from procedural selection of random info we might watch. There are all sorts of things that might be done finding creative ways to display galacitc information. Even if it's holiday adverts and pictures of player bases to vacation on.... Blade Runner style on a tall building sort of thing ;D

..Alien Geks throwing strange petals down at our boots as we get out of our starships...'Welcome to your holiday destination.!...You have arrived at the Infested Zone enjoy your stay...'
