There are two types for freighters, the basic randomly generated ones, and Sentinel/Star Destroyer ones (the second type can only be gotten from space battles)

just finished fighting pirates if thats what you mean by battle it's A class with 19 slots guessing i should fly around and try for one with more slot's?

the capital freighters (like a star destroyer) you only get randomly after a space battle, which also occurs randomly when you warp into a system (often after around 3h playtime).

after the battle you can talk to the freighter captain and buy the freighter. there is no guarantee that it is an s-class freighter (they often spawn in a rich system).

there are some YT videos that describe the procedure. But I only know some of them before 4.0 ...

all Freighters are Capital ships but some are more capital than others... yes, it is kind of confusing because there are normal and capital Freighters... all of Freighters are C, B, A, or S class...

capital Freighters are physically the largest in size and in max number of inventory or tech slots... there are only a couple of types of them and they come with only a couple of static visual representations...

normal or regular Freighters are system freighters... their appearance is assembled from a library of various stern, midsection, bow, and keel parts...

you won't ever see the game say that a freighter is a normal/regular or capital Freighter... you can only tell by the physical size in the images and by counting the indentations and/or cargo pods in the image of them... when you get one, they all look the same inside no matter if they are a system Freighter or a capital Freighter...

look here for more information: https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Freighter_Types
NOTE: in this page, it says "Regular" which is "Normal"... the wiki always seems to have some slight inconsistencies in terms used by different authors... in this case, normal and regular are interchangeable...

not sure if i should just take a A or S class for free if one pops up then get cash for a capital one or hold out i hope i find a capital freighter can you even get a capital freighter with out paying for it.
Faceplant Oct 30, 2022 @ 2:28pm
Yes, you can get a capital freighter without paying for it. I have one in my current save, and I've actually gotten an S-class capital freighter in my first space battle, but that's extremely rare.

Unless you really need extra storage on your freighter at this point in your game, I wouldn't worry too much about the free freighter. There's really not that much difference, othan than price, and it's still not that hard to get units.

Yes, take them for free. They're worth a lot so if you find a better one to buy then it's trade in value will cover the cost. If you want to go looking for a big S class then this is how you do it. Get the Portal address for a system where they spawn (from YT video made since Waypoint update). Go there and make a restore point in the space station. You need to be three hours into your game session and have warped about 5 times before a space battle will be triggered. So warp out of the target system to a nearby one and make a restore point again. Keep hopping from system to system around the target system until a space battle triggers. Then reload your previous restore point. You know the next jump will trigger the battle so jump to your target system. Do NOT fight the pirates but go into the space station and make a restore point. When you exit the station the pirates will be gone but the big freighter will be there. Land on it, exit your ship and check to see what class it is. If it's an S class then buy it from the Captain. If it isn't then reload your restore point and repeat the sequence. Every time you do this the freighters class will change. Keep doing it until you get the one you want. Normally when you exit your ship a restore point is made, but when you land on the freighter and exit your ship that doesn't happen, so your restore point will always be the one you made on the space station. Ignore the autosave. How long it takes to get an S class depends on the gods of RNG, but it will happen. You just have to have enough money to buy the freighter so if you already have an A class that's upgraded you'll have enough. Remember that tech doesn't transfer between freighters so unless you want to make everything over again remove it and store it in your exosuit.

The first capital freighter that you actually click to own in the menu will be free for you, but don't necessarily take the first you see... Take one with a good class and a good nr. of slots. But AFAIK, you cannot upgrade the freighter class later, so I would take the first S class - if you get lucky - and upgrade it.

I don't think that the methods shown in YT videos to get an S class will still work, at least not so easily because now you must avoid leaving your ship if you want to keep your restore point. You need to make an external save before warping in the system.
The reason is: You have to leave your ship to go to the captain's dialogue and see if the ship is great or not, you cannot tell it by just seeing it, the exterior may be great but its slot numbers and stats shabby. If you then see in the dialogue the ship isn't good, your old save from before warping isn't there anymore...So you need an external save to reload.

What difference does the class of the freighter make?
I had a C class, switched to an A class when I could with all the annoyance that caused (having to rebuild all my rooms), and so far it hasn't affected the game in any noticeable way.

Better class (S>A>B>C) will allow more tech/cargo area slots, and better class provides higher boosts for frigate missions.

yeah finaly got lucky and got one of the big ones S class ones.

If I've warped willingly one time and have done 2 nexus missions that warped me to another system, does it count as 3 warps then, or only one?
