Wow, you can just steal from NPC freighters
I guess this is not new in Waypoint, but I got very surprised to see that you can steal goods from an NPC freighter if you find cargo rooms inside, the dialogue for this cargo can be opened and what's in the slots doesn't corrispond to what you see when you launch the captain's dialogue, but a lot more... It saved me a lot of time to grind for fueling my next frigate expedition, plus I got some really expensive crafted materials that I can sell.
I wonder if this is one of the numerous bugs in NMS that has not been looked over yet since the Endurance update.

So it's really worth to visit these NPC freigthers lurking around even if you plan not to buy them.

i always tend to check out freighters. STUFF!!! (people should not let me in their homes......)

What do you mean by "cargo room"? I had to try this, so I searched a few NPC freighters (not from space battles, but just normal freighters), and found one with a storage container, but it appears to be the same as one of my storage containers.

I haven't tried taking anything because I can't fit it in my inventory, but I assume you're talking about somthing different? If it was a copy of one of your storage units that you could take from without actually removing it from your storage unit, of course, that would be another duplication glitch.
I have found some small plant rooms on NPCs freighters growing just a couple of plants you could pick :) There has always been a couple of barrels on freighters. Since the freighter update procedural freighters have random layouts with a few random items. So they are always worth a visit if you decide to land. I like the atmosphere now with some NPCs walking around or using refiners on one I found.

A lot of games do this sadly. Look at the Witcher. I like Skyrim and Fallout4 because you get slapped for stealing if caught.

Are you sure you didn't steal your own cargo?

Since Endurance NPC freighters come with randomly preset additional rooms, they differ in every freighter and cargo rooms are amongst such possible rooms. In your own freighter such cargo rooms will corrispond to cargo slots which are separately shown, you can rename these slots too and to get into them you have to use TAB > scroll with Q/A to reach them.
Now, other posters below question wether this was my own cargo room. I'm pretty sure it's not, because I use to place such special items (that I have stolen in that freigher) in a dedicated container room of my freighter, and in that case it was all mixed-up, not my way to store items. As said, in this NPC freighter I was able to open the dialogue with E in that cargo room, then my exosuit inventory would appear on the left and that cargo room content on the right, I just have transfered valuable items (there were other items less valuable, and definitly NOT an arrangement that I do in my own freighter), and then transfered these items into my own freighter.

Not every NPC freighters will have such cargo rooms, also called Container rooms, so to reproduce what I say you need to find one which has such a room. You should be able to point on the yellow moving holoicon and then open the dialogue with E.

I will try to repeat this action and report here.

First I was thinking this too, but now I'm pretty sure, read my response to Faceplant8 above for the details.

Well, I may have got lucky only 1 time doing this, I'm not sure if it repeats :)
Sentient_Pickle Oct 29, 2022 @ 10:46am
yeah this happened to me as well. I got really excited about what I found in the cargo container, bragged to friends and even posted about it in the NMS Discord server. I ended up deleting my posts after the facepalm moment when I found out I was all excited about finding my own stuff lol. :steamfacepalm:
Sentient_Pickle Oct 29, 2022 @ 10:48am
and it DOES repeat. The rooms in npc freighters are gonna be random, but quite often one layout includes a cargo container room, container number 0 specifically, and all you'll find in it are whatever you've previously placed in it.

Ok, I have to correct my post: NO, you cannot steal from NPC freighters except some carbon from the plants laying in some agriculture sections. Some freighters will indeed have cargo rooms where the container can be opened with E, but as Jochum and HughJardon have commented, that's MY cargo. So if anything they would steal from me but they don't :I)

think the OP meant the cargo containers like we can install on our freighters. And what do you mean you got a black hole?
