Horrible VR Performance
Nice Game, but seemes not optimised for VR - even in absolute minimum settings with all online funtions disabled this looks really bad and runs even worse. Tested with Ryzen 5600X, B550 Chipset, 32GB DDR4 RAM, RTX 3070 Ti - Game installed on M2 PCI-E 4.0 SSD- using Occulus Link with Steam VR (i know, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ combination) Sometimes it is playable but if i leave a planet or enter a base it will become a stuttering and flickering nightmare. do not recommend for VR users. any tipps for optimisation ?

Try to launch steamvr first then launch the game from steamvr librairy , if i straight up launch nms from my oculus link home its an stutter fest , when i launch steamvr and launch nms from inside steamvr its fine .
Also try dlss for more perf!

I'm on a 3080, with very similar specs to you. My game runs pretty well on High. If it wasn't for Oculus link you would be able to run it better I'm certain.

Occulus link isn't the best on the best of days. You're right, bad combos.
You want something taht uses ALL teh juice stright form your pc, an Oculus link doesn't.

tahnk you, nice tip, i will try that later - i usually start occulus link first, then desktop passthrough and start the game via steam wich loads steamvr after that.

does that mean every VR glasses except occulus ones run great because of the occulus link injector ? or is there any possibility i can bypass occulus link without buying new HMD ?

You can't change it with the Oculus Link. problem is the link does not provide the full thoughport power that your pc is capable of.
I'm afraid you need a dedicated VR kit like a Rift S, Valve Index or HP Reverb G2, all which makes use of the full power of a pc. I can't speak for every VR, obviously, but most with a decent wired connection (not a link) work the same way.

I read about Occulus Killer Method in some other CommunityHub - does anyone have experience with this using nms ?

The stuttering when leaving/entering a planet or Hub is a general game issue. This becomes so much more noticeable in vr. There is a mod that will fix this issue on Nexus mods https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2217

Yup deskopt passthrought = stutter fest , launching thru steamvr is fine tho . Only with this game , i think its because of the openxr plugin , back in the day its was actually using the real occulus sdk lol aniway yeah try to launch steamvr them launching it inside steamvr , no desktop passthrought

i almost feel stupid for asking this : do i need to start up the occulus software before starting steamvr or start desktop view in occulus home or is the hmd working directly via steamvr with guardian etc ? i start every game after going on my desktop through the glasses using the hmd controllers for starting the games, no matter if they use steamvr or direct occulus mode like dirt, iracing, fs2020 etc. - worked quite well so far but never tried anything besides that as i thought occulus needs to be "seeing" my desktop.

my (probably stupid) vstarting method :
1. start pc, 2. start hmd, 3. enable occulus link 4. enable desktop view in occulus 5. navigate via vr controller to the steam game i wanna play - steamvr starts, game starts.

i never did a lot with steam vr as i didnt even find my games there or any settings - i just thought it was just slowing down my pc in the background for no reason - now i realize that occulus might be the major problem here

I do the same for all my game but i think the problem for this game is since nms is now using openxr instead of the true native oculus sdk it need steamvr first .

What i meant for this case : open you link normally then go into your librairy and open steamvr ( from inside the headset)
Now you are into the steamvr home. Use the librairy from the steamvr UI from inside the headset to launch nms.
So no desktop passthrought at all .

To answer you tho for general use you dont have to launch the desktop passthrought at all for the oculus to see you . You can turn on your link then just go in your app and launch everything there , steamvr/oculus . You may have to check the app filter tho you need to check the unidentified source or something like that for steamvr game to show up in the oculus librairy .
Exept no man sky which dont show up there for me. its an weird one lol

Disabling the Home of steamvr and oculus can sometime help the perf too .
jerry-lee95 Oct 26, 2022 @ 12:01pm
The oculus sdk normally run better than steamvr BUT you dont get an worse performance using steamvr API than someone with an index .
Steamvr is working on all headset.
Oculus sdk is working only on oculus so of course its gonna be better optimise.
But i dont think steamvr is better optimise for an index than an quest .

Vr is still hard to setup good tho. dont take a lot to crash performance versus an pancake game that you would not even notice ..
jerry-lee95 Oct 26, 2022 @ 12:10pm
Oh and this game engine is wack . ANY setting you change ingame you need to restart otherwise the performance IS gonna crash .

thanks again for your info and advice, i tried to start via steam VR but i dont think i did this right bercause it felt beyond retarded - with even worse performance

i did the following:
1.Start HMD
2.Enable Link (no desktop passthrough)
3. Start SteamVR - in HMD i see an empty plane, opening steamVR menu via left occulus button says "no games" - i choose add game and on my desktop outside suddenly SteamBigpicture opens - showing my VR games i cant see in the hmd.

i start nms via mouse on my monitor and in hmd a steamVR desktop passthroug mode opens and after some flickering the game launches, even laggier than ever.

if this is how you start games via steamVR i should get a fkn playstation.
Henki85 Oct 26, 2022 @ 1:03pm
i also noticed in taskmanager this game itself is using less than 5 % CPU, system wide CPU usage less 20%, when running the game i cant even hear my CPU Cooler - this is the only game that shows this behaviour - i even prioritized nms, occuluc serverx64 as high priority - still runs like crap.

Well i do not understand that you dont see any game at step 3 into your librairy....
Big picture is because you have add an game shortcut , not the actual exe , dont do that for vr game .
Aniway i dont understand that your game dont show up in steamvr app. Its normally pretty straightforward.

It is indeed not how it is supoose to launch /perform lol.
But well vr is fancy to have an stable setup.
Turn off vsync in control panel maybe ?
Its kindla wild the number of people i see having performance probleme that just forgot they had vsync at 60hz or any fps limiter loll

Sorry that didnt help you hope you find the solution !
