Can you transfer a save to new install?
I am thinking of reinstalling the game to the Data disk instead of the windows C disk on my PC but can I save a saved game and reinstall it?

You could simply move your save files to the data disk.

The place where your games are saved is a folder, just find that and copy it somewhere while you re install, then paste that folder where it belongs

Remember that your saves and your game files are in different locations. My saves are buried in my Apps folder, which is on my C drive by default. My NMS installation is defaulting to wherever I've placed my Steam default installation. On my compy, this is a completely different physical drive, G.

You have two different programs controlling default behavior here. Steam controls the game install, but Windows actually defines where Apps are stored. So all my season data, save data, and account data are controlled by a default setting that puts all data created by an App in a particular location.

So, so long as you don't tell the uninstaller to delete all your saves and player data, it should stay in that Apps folder. The new installation will then perform its run for the first time check and hopefully notice that you have this stuff already.

We can take a second step and ensure this happens, though. Check C:/Users/YourUsername/AppData(hidden)/Roaming/HelloGames/NMS/st_(random)/
I would copy that entire st_(random number) folder. This is probably overkill, but it has everything of interest to me in there. Then I just place that copy somewhere else for later. If I reinstall NMS in a new drive and the game starts to create a new account and save directory, I've got a backup version to overwrite the new one.

Great explanation! I like how each post is exponentially more verbose than the last. If yours is a chapter, the next guy is obligated to post a book about this process :steamhappy:

I forget exactly where the option is, but Steam has a feature to just move your current install rather than having to uninstall and download again etc. Think if you right-click the game in the list (library tab) it's somewhere in those options IIRC.

Doesn't Steam cloud save for NMS?

Its supposed to. No one in their right mind would depend on the cloud for something like this.

I have used the Steam Cloud feature on different machines and it worked fine. In my case, I was not really changing rigs, just using my account on two different rigs.

I would also recommend you should keep your own personal back ups for any games you do not want to lose progress on. I lost my day one save for NMS and was never able to get it back via Steam cloud. Now I back up my save files regularly.

So Steam Cloud is a nice tool, but not wise to rely on it exclusively.

If you need to move the game to another location on your computer, perhaps due to e.g. lack of space, or maybe you want it on your fast SSD, you don't have to worry about where the save files are, because they are in your (windows/appdata) folder.

For the move, Steam has an excellent tool for this purpose built-in.

Description of the function can be found on this support page.

However, you should always have a fresh backup of your save files, hopefully you will never need it, but unforeseen things can happen, and then the backup can be good to have.

Just use Goatfungus NMS save editor to make a backup, including all your profile unlocks for expeditions. Then use it to restore them in the new location. It'll do all the work for you.
Just try not to ruin the game for yourself by giving yourself everything in the world.

Ok sounds good thanks all.

Ok have moved the files now, using the Steam inhouse function. One thing since doing that my initial loading times have increased. I use to load in around 10 - 15 sec, now it takes about 45 - 60. I thought moving it to the data drive would increase performance!

10-15 secs is pretty good. 45-60 isnt that bad either.
