A little help, my eyes are killing me.
Can someone tell me how to turn off chromatic abberation in NMS. It really makes it hard to play for an extended period and it makes my eyes hurt after I play. I used to think all the complaints were BS but I found that turning it off in other games has made a huge difference. I can't see it but I can feel it. Anyone know how, HG? A little help here?

It's not stated as such, but if you disable the Video Option "Vignette and Scanlines", it will also disable many chromatic aberration filters.

There may still be some individual object light sources that cause various effects, but there are some mods that try to remove those, if you find ones that bother you.

Yeah I see that but I'm not sure what you mean by "many CA filters". From what I've read and "researched" CA is either on or off. I can't even get a straight answer whether they use it or not. If I might ask, where are you getting your info from?

NMS uses a proprietary game engine rather than a generic game engine like Unity or Unreal. Generic game engines often implement chromatic aberration as a post-render shader filter effect which can be enabled or disabled as a boolean option.

Since NMS does not use a generic game engine, it has a fairly custom rendering engine but it is clear that it uses chromatic aberration. Toggle the option mentioned above. It will not remove CA everywhere-- in particular, some unusual planets have CA effects-- but it will help.

Thanks Wile E (luv the name) but I'm not sure that vid is relevant to this issue. I have watched that vid before BTW. I think the issue is that some people see better or differently. Some people can tell when a frame rate drops below something our eyes aren't even supposed to be able to perceive. Some people can clearly see the CA and it really bothers them. Some people can't see it. It's not something I see and go that looks really awful.
Personally if I notice or see it in a game I don't really care or take note. I have a game we used to play and my ten year said a few times "this game makes me sleepy". I thought he WAS just sleepy but then I noticed he'd change games and perk up. Then I saw something on CA. I looked and turned it off for him and me (both PCs) and it made such a difference I couldn't believe it. I really wish they just take it out or at least have an option to remove it.
I know what CA is IRL and why some DEVs or whatever got convinced it was a good thing tp put in games but it's really just some artsy fartsy thing from film school. We don't need it and it doesn't add to the look of a game. IMHO.
I want to thank everyone for their time and help. cswiger, especially if his info is correct explained NMS's CA very well. I wish HG would address the issue but maybe it's too the point that it's so ingrained in their program/game that to take it out would be more trouble than it's worth. I just wish they'd say that.
I did already have that option turned off. I just thought I'd turn off CA in NMS and ended up going down a rabbit hole LOL

The CA is only at the edges of the frustum so if you increase the FOV you won't notice it as much. You can alter all the settings in the graphics settings file in the game folder. I detest CA and half of the other garbage filters that studios use so I feel your pain. There is a reason it is called 'aberration'. It is something you do not want in photography. Why games latched onto it as 'cool' is beyond me.

the effect is horrible, it's like they tried to turn things 3d, i can't play with it on at all... it literally makes me want to throw up after a while of playing with it on.

It is a 3D game but what CA is simulating is light hitting the lens of the camera and then separating into its component colors. Again this is an aberration in photography and is not desired at all in most photos. It can be caused by the lens, sun angle, exposure and a host of other things.

Chromatic Aberation is an abomination that no artist should use. I loathe this crap. Our eyes see things Not Like That.

But yeah it's scan and vignettes.

What they mean by 'three d' here is the old garbage 3-d movies with their bicolored glasses to make an effect. It is entirely unnecessary in games like this. While I understand why some games and artists use it, it instantly marks that thing a couple steps down for me.

I hate everything they put in video games to make it look like something seen through a camera lens. All those things break immersion for me. I want to feel I'm there looking at the world with my own eyes that don't see lens flare, motion blur, depth of field, chromatic aberration, camera shake, blood or dirt splatter effects, or film grain. I don't want to feel like I'm watching movie, I want to be in the movie.

Or head bob....the worst of the worst. Thankfully our brains filter the bobbing out when we walk. Our brains and vestibular system filter a lot of things out that games want to seem to put back in and then wonder why their games make us ill. But yes blood spatter is so dumb. If you actually got blood in your eye that would be extremely painful. Film grain is beyond stupid. Intentionally adding noise to your entire screen to make it look more gritty b/c your artists can't product convincing textures.

The only time I'm ok with these is if there is some special cut scene or we are viewing the world through a camera lens for a specific purpose, etc. Like looking through security camera footage or something. It is never ok in first person when you are suppose to be just a person walking through the world.
