Emeril?
So if you need to be in green stars to find emeril but you can't get to green stars w/o the tech that requires emeril to build, how do you get emeril?

I don't see it as a reward on the expedition path, haven't seen it listed as a resource on any planets, which if I need to be in green star isn't surprising. Haven't seen it on Galactic trade, so how do I get enough to build my chromatic warp shielding?

Does any milestone requires you visiting green stars?
1. Waiting for frigates to bring you some emeril as soon as you debrief them.
2. Going into the Anomaly and looking for "Gather x amount of activated emeril"-missions at the Nexus - this will teleport you into green systems.
It doesn't work that way. You need chromatic metal to build a cadmium drive which takes you to a red star system. You need cadmium, found in red systems, to build an emeril drive which takes you to green stars. In the green stars you get emeril which lets you build the indium drive which allows you to go to blue/everything.

Basically: you don't need cadmium to build a cadmium drive, you don't need emeril to build an emeril drive and you don't need indium to build an indium drive. Seems weird but there you you go.

That's not the case for the hyperdrive for the freighter. Its more of a 2 step process You have to install an emeril drive on your starship (which requires cadmium), get emeril from a green system and then upgrade the freighter hyperdrive using emeril.

@OP you can also hunt for buried caches. They sometimes contain emeril.
Some starship components yield cadmium when deconstructed. That's if you want to be clever but not take the easier paths.
I got cadmium from deconstructing stuff, if you can get at least one emeril you can refine it with a chromatic metal to get 2 emeril. Same for indium!

If you look at the description of the Emeril Drive Blueprint for starships, you will see that it does not require Emeril to build it, but a lower tier.

Cadium drive, copper or chromatic, was it? which can be found in all regular systems.
Emeril drive, cadmium
Indium drive, emeril

So, if u need to mine emeril, u need to mine cadmium first, then head to an emeril system and mine it, or scrap ships and gamble with rng.

EDIT: Oh wait, you can't purchase bp at anomaly for starship hyperdrives in exp 8... ah! Will have to figure it out ahah!

That is the way it works normally. The expedition locked out the research to learn the hyperdrive for red stars on normal ships.

This is the correct answers:

I never had a frigate bring me emeril, it's always activated emeril.
Cadmium can be obtained by purchasing any (starship) pulse drive upgrade. Install & then scrap it. The Cadmium yield is directly related to the upgrade class (eg an “S” class upgrade, when scrapped yields the most Cadmium).

Every space station has at the min a “C” class pulse drive upgrade.
You can also get Emeril, Cadmium, and Indium from Collecting Buried Cache Containers. Takes a Bit Longer, but eventually you will get your needs met.
If I remember corectly, you do not need much of Cadmium/Emeril/Indium - any of them are multiplying if refined toogether with Chromatic Metal...

Correct. Any one of the stellar metals, including copper, plus chromatic in the refiner yields more of that stellar metal.

Also keep in mind that refining a stellar metal with pure ferrite yields double the chromatic, which can really help feed those reactions in the early game.

That's not actually true. You can't buy it, but I did manage to acquire it from a crashed ship (or rather its beacon).

Not that it's of any use without an actual hyperdrive, of course.
