Freighter cargo slots - 24 or 48?
I recently started a new Endurance save and found an S-class freighter and have upgraded the storage. I was able to increase the cargo slot count in this freighter to 48 cargo slots. My other saves also have S-class freighters, but the cargo slots are maxed out at 24. Any ideas on why this difference in cargo slots? Anybody else see this?

there are different classes of freighters in NMS and types (normal or capital)

24 here , S-Class capital ship (Star destroyer style). You got lucky, be happy.

i think my own 32 or 34 cargo slots A-class Capital ship not sure what style mine is :)
In my main save, I have capital freighter (won from a space battle) that is the Sentinel type. It's specs are: S:48+21+24. In my new save, I found and bought a local system freighter. After upgrading the storage, it's specs are S:48+21+48. I was no expecting to be able to have more than 24 cargo slots, but I was surprised that I could keep increasing the number. I'm quite happy about it, but am wondering why I can't increase the cargo slots in my main save.

These are all interesting points. I hope someone will have the answer for us. Are you guys all playing vanilla?
I'm playing in normal mode, no mods or edits to save files.

I went on the hunt for an explanation too, why I was able to upgrade to 40 Cargo Slots in a new non expedition save, when my old save only allowed 16, a very old save that is with an old freighter that has not aged at all.

Wiki says 24 Cargo Slots is max, in more detail 48 General Inventory/21 Tech/ 24 Cargo.

I am off course happy to keep my 40 cargo slots but still want to know why. No mods.

However, I think I may have an explanation that need investigating. The configuration of the default cargo slot arrangement may play a part. If the configuration is spread out to more than 3 rows then you may be able to upgrade further.

So to get 24, you need the initial configuration when you bought the freighter to not be more than 3 rows. My old freighter from my very old pre-NEXT save had got 4 rows sparse arrangement of slots during the Endurance Update but I still maxed out at 16 cargo slots. Had a similar issue with Nutrient processor not given me max slots so old saves have that inherent bugs.

I do not recall the configuration of my cargo slots in my new save weeks ago. So if anyone wishes to test they can start by investigating how this can affect max cargo slots.

Cargo inventories retroactively added to ships you already own by the relevant update are allegedly set at C-class irregardless of the ship's actual specification. You want more, you either find a new freighter or change the inventory class manually by editing the save file.

This is a bug that really should be fixed :(

Same for me: 48-21-24 in my old save (Class S Sentinel freighter). I hope they will fix it.

The wiki is kinda confusing. I dunno if is just written in a bad format and simply lacks a clear answer. Like because all the max slots are the same they just failed to represent them.

Every freighter has the same maximum number of slots using cargo bulkheads for their class. Which is 48-21-24 slots.

The charts they show are the STARTING number of slots for the class. The special warships that appear during battles have more starting slots than the other class.
I have another freighter that I upgraded to 48 cargo slots. My theory is that any freighter acquired on or after the Endurance (3.95) release can have more cargo slots. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2849915509

The difference between standard and capital is the starting inventory.

Oh and some more information on that....
After getting my glyphs in my current game I went S Class Freighter shopping to upgrade my A class. The S Class freighter in the system (ie one of the one in the random fleets in the system.) Which doing this had some added benefits.
- Less save scumming 2 fleets nearby gave two chances per reload. Took me 12 reloads.
- The value of the system freighters S class was only 23 million. Which meant it only costed me 11 million to upgrade to a S class rather than the 180-220 million for the jump battle freighters.
