Does anyone use black holes?
Whats the point of them? They just smash up your inventory and send you somewhere random .. am I missing something?

I upgraded the freighter instead, then did the trip to the center with ~5400LY jumps at the time, no system damage, no looking for black holes.
Part of the discussion of starship vs freighter vs black holes is speed as a function of effort:

There are YouTube runs showing this to be about 4 to 5 mins if you go straight to the engineering console, no collecting loot, no stops at all, then repeat. So to get 6 S-Class hyperdrive upgrades, you may have to 21 X 6 or 126 runs. At 5 mins each, that's another 10.5 hours of grinding.

Starships however, you can buy and click through 100 S-Class modules within a few minutes, probably less than 20 min. The longest part of the process would be actually getting the 55,000 nanites in the first place, which is easily done scrapping for less than 2 hours.

So let's compare:
2 .5 hrs upgrading a Starship to 3500+ ly vs.
16+ hours upgrading a Frigate to 3200 ly.
As mentioned, cheating via duplicating and such can reduce these times significantly, but I am talking about normal vanilla play.

Wow, first of nice work.

For me it was never about getting there as soon as possible. I did not want to have freighter battles, repairs or new stations. I have the freighter anyways, I'm on my 3rd now. It does take a few weeks to setup a freighter, couple derelict runs per evening. I also have the ship with 6 jump modules (x-class now). Getting to the center gave me an excuse to use my freighter.

Well ... you can get all the freighter hyperdrive upgrade plans in one evening of cargo pod piracy. Expanding tech slots enough to fit probably one more evening. Two weeks are for sure not needed, but some units etc are.

Meanwhile.

How far do you think a ship can jump with 3 hyperdrive modules? If your answer is "3500," what game are you playing? If you're not using black holes, that's just dumb.

There are S-Class hyper-drive mods for your Freighter, same as Ships. They can be found at the engineering terminal in Derelict Freighter missions. One in 8 chance to get that module. You want a system that has a Derelict Freighter that drops S-Class mods and that also gives 250LY when that modules comes up. That way you get your freighter to 6000+ LY jumps. You want 6 of those.... ~48 Derelict Freighter missions and you're done.

I spent a couple nights running through derelicts, about 30 runs, and never got one hyperdrive module. So I have 30 S-Class mods for other things, which is fine, but no hyperdrive. So your estimate of 48 derelicts seems off. Maybe 6 hyperdrive mods will all cluster in the last 18 runs?

No wonder why using black holes to try and get AWAY from the center was failing miserably for me

I haven't tried piracy, but derelict farming was a bust for me. Not one hyperdrive drop in 30 runs. That's about 7 hours for none. Since I am also farming storage modules and augments, I search the entire derelict rather than just run to engineering.

You use 6 to get 3500+, not 3. 3 in inventory, 3 in tech. It's easy, and as long as you start out with a high range ship, I always get a higher range than a basic freighter upgrade (ie. various star drives increase range to about 3210 or so). The only real problem with doing this is you can run out of storage space for all the hyperdrive modules you need to click through. So you may have to do this in phases, filling your inventory with modules each time.

I find them useless. If I could jump through a back hole to a star system and then turn around and take the black hole back to the system I came from then they might be useful as a bridge between systems. Unfortunately they don't work that way. Also, if every new system is random, what difference does it make if I visit a new system 1 ly away or one that's 50,000 ly away?

The starting points and ending points of black holes are fixed, and there is a calculator somewhere on the web that lets you plot courses using them, ...but, I would agree, it's a lot of hassle as I don't like to just wander a galaxy aimlessly. The only "advantage" of them is that they push you towards the center of the galaxy in about 7500 ly jumps which is about twice the range of a fully upgraded starship. Black holes were introduced before freighters were available or useful as a slightly faster way to the center.... but they came at a time and material cost. Simply using your base transporter to and fro from different galaxies (or parts thereof) is much faster and convenient.

If I remember correctly they don't break stuff in the Tech inventory so get a ship with large tech inventory and put the important stuff in there (or all your tech if it'll fit). I might be wrong it's a long time since I did the 2 centre of galaxy achieves and since then I haven't been near a black hole (in the game) but the black holes you get from the guy at the anomoly take you closer to the centre, at least they all did when I did it.

one interest of ablack hole is when you're about to jump through the galaxy core. As you're close to it (say 3K LY), find a black hole nearby and jump through it. This will get you in a nearby system. From there follow the galaxy center map route to its ultimate star. This will be your gateway system BUT ... jumping through the core using this one will get you to the next galaxy all right BUT VERY CLOSE TO ITS OWN CORE ! Useful when you want to visit galaxies and not spending too much time and resources travelling from an arrival point near the galaxy edge.
This was great advice, I tried it a few times and it is indeed a slightly quicker way of jumping galaxies.

However, surely the whole point of jumping galaxies is to drop a base next to a portal in each galaxy. If you're going to visit a portal anyway, you might as well use it, so in that context the black hole method actually takes longer and is more hassle.

This black hole shortcut is useful only if you are not using the relic portals at all. If you are using portals for something, for example to explore first, then you might as well just spawn as usual at the galaxy outer edge. One portal is as good as any other.

Singularity drive is the clear win. 1.5M LY in one hop today, no damage.

Finished my 3rd freighter, about 8 weeks ago. All the mods are from the MS Uenoh XI, see https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/n50vcs/more_information_than_you_require_about_derelict/

6x Jump (250LY)
3x Expedition Efficiency (20%)
5x Expedition Speed (15%)
3x Expedition Trade (15%)
5x Expedition Science (15%)
7x Expedition Mining (15%)
3x Expedition Defense (15%)

38 runs for 3 in each category, except jump drive has 6. Only 8 extra mods. I had most mods ready before I got the new freighter. Getting the bulkheads took the longest, but there is a 4 room derelict for that. Did ~10 runs per evening to not burn out.

And that gets back to my original point....it is much faster initially to click through modules and max upgrade a starship than a freighter. However, the 30 runs I did at least let me upgrade my freighter engine modules to the standard 3210 or so ly, so at least it's comparable with my starship.

I hope everyone here takes a moment to thank Hello for not making NMS an MMO with raid bosses that you fight with optimized freighter upgrades.
