Comment: Don't bother explicitly searching for them, just fly around slowly when you land on a new world. They can be hard to find, then you'll find lots and lots.
If you really want to go ahead with it, I've had good success on planets with star brambles. Mysteriously, the CDs often seem to be close to drop pods,, so buy a load of drop-pod coordinates from a minor settlement and set them off with the signal booster. When you get there, upgrade your back-pack, then jump up the nearest hill and scan the surrounding area. Anecdotally, about one in six had CD's nearby. That has been repeated three planets, but could be just coincidence.
On a planet with a good climate (star brambles), you can just go walkabout. Choose a direction and just keep going, while picking up salvaged data, investigating buildings and having a good scan around each time you stop. Sooner or later, you will find CDs and you'd be surprised what else you find.
One time, while on such a walkabout, I met a lone NPC in the middle of nowhere that told me that he wanted to top himself. I thought I might be able to help, but he told me to leave him in peace. Later, in the same trip, I met a lone Vy'keen who said he was looking for a mate and did I know of anyone who might be up for it. Naturally, I ran away as fast as I could.
I find them by accident while doing other things. There is no particular good way to specifically search for them.
If you wanted to do that, you'd just need to get some drop pod coordinates to use. Upgrade the old backpack, scan for deposits. I wouldn't bother hopping up a hill, though - just use your scanner.
400+ hours and I wasn't even looking. By then I've found more fun ways to get nanites like shooting sentinels.
Anyways I have found 6 deposits through 3 planets and none are anywhere near a droppod. Good luck though.

Someone asked once you have your stuff upgraded what else is there to do.
Seriously? You think upgrading kit is all there is to do in this game? That's sad.
Anyway, I found 90% of them on lush planets - many of them were not far from each other (I found 6 groups of Curious Deposits within 1200u of each other on one planet, and built a couple of bases and short range teleporters between them - spent a silly amount of time refilling refiners!).
