for noobs wondering how to get upgrades to freighter hyperdrive on the expedition 8 save
you don't need any for the expedition
once the expedition is over the save will convert to a 'Normal mode'and things that were blocked for the expedition i.e hyperdrives and quests will be unblocked.
early conversions may or may not unblock these things due to (mission block) bugs
best advice to noobs...
complete the expedition and claim all rewards (con't forget the last one)
convert it if you want to...then leave this savefile alone until the expedition period is complete (...and any bugs have been worked out)
use the time to start a new save in normal mode and learn the game mechanics (do the tutorial)
you can always go back to the expedition save once the blocks are removed
In general, the freighter is painfully slow to upgrade and in general, and you can upgrade the range of a STARSHIP MUCH faster. So if you want to get to quest destinations faster, upgrade the starship, warp, and then summon the freighter. All the quest destinations are on yellow stars. There are several planets along the route of the Expedition that sell Class S hyperdrive upgrades for the starship, so I found that much faster. With 6 S-Class starship hyperdrive upgrades (easy to find in this Expedition), you can easily get to about 1500 to 2000 ly with the stock base 101 ships that are available.
So if speed (minimizing the number of jumps) is the only consideration, you don't need to go to cadmium, emeril, or indium stars. BUT, there is one advantage that would make upgrading drives more valuable: getting Cadmium, Emeril, or Indium drives POTENTIALLY could provide faster cash. If you didn't have online discovery on, for example, making enough money to do the quest in style would be slow, esp if you are thinking of making this Expedition permanent, (with S-Class frigates and S-Class freighter) which would require lots of cash outside the requirements of the Expedition. One of the quest milestones is a cash amount you reach, but even that is low if you are upgrading your freighter and frigates.
WITH discovery on, getting enough cash is easy since bases have been planted all around the Expedition with farms and such so you can quickly farm your way to riches. With discovery OFF, this is much much slower. Slow enough, in fact, to make it worthwhile to upgrade your starship drives to get to an activated indium planet, and build a mine at a wild base computer somewhere. You could also brute force this with ancient bones, storm crystals, or even larval cores, but the repetitious number of times you have to be actively involved makes it tedious, IMO.
But what about the Expedition tech blockages of the hyperdrive and its upgrades? You can get the hyperdrive blueprint from Operation Centers even if you don't have access to the Golden Vector. At least you used to be able to get it from there, as I did so awhile ago. However I know for sure you can presently get cadmium drives, emeril drives, and indium drives. These are random drops. And they seem to only reward you blueprints you don't already have ...that's always been my experience at least... which gives one a potential strategy for getting a particular blueprint more easily. Tech rewards also can be got from other places, but Op Centers are more obvious to find, as you can even get maps from the space station to these sites.
