I can't find the portal again
I found a portal on a planet. I left, then after a while came back and I have no idea where it is again. Is there a easy way to locate things that you found?

You will learn to put down a save beacon (I color mine red) when you find a portal. Best option is to build a base nearby but save beacon will work.

There is no easy way to find it if you did not mark it. You will need to use the monolith method which will find one for you...maybe not that specific one.

Have you tried pushing down the left post to activate the resource scan? It should bring up the icon for any poi's that you have already been to. But yes, as Mr. Bufferlow said, a save beacon is best especially if you have a base on that planet.

As for finding it again, there are two ways.

Hit up one of those Atlas alters, (after successfully solve it?) and have the the race appropriate item to give for asking for the location of a portal (might not be the same planet).

If you happen to have a portal in your system already; I think you can change the first character in the dialier to get different planets in that system.

After that, place a save beacon on it and set it to a color that makes sense to you so you can find it again. (Note: limit 5 beacons per planet)

Edit: Or third, if you really want, you can write down the X,Y coordinates that are shown in your ship or handheld scanner.

Thanks I think save beacon is probably the best solution since it marks the location.

What do you mean by left post?

At some point you'll get exocraft. The scanners on the exocraft will find alien buildings, generally monoliths. And as above answering the question correctly and the appropriate sacrifice will get you portal coordinates.

Once found, either a save beacon or a base nearby to find it again.

Post must be controller speak.

Since you can only use a maximum of 5 marker or save beacons per planet, it is a far better to simply screenshot the coordinates of places you want to document, using the built in coordinate displays both in your scanner and ship, as such:

By doing this you have no restriction in how many places you keep track of. Also, if you plant beacons, they don't have written labels, so if you have dozens over many worlds, you will probably forget what they mark, plus each beacon deducts from your overall building allowance.

Here are actual examples of the screenshots I took to remember portal or other starting locations:

Those are some good ideas

Its a good idea to have a base with a teleporter within a few minute flight to a portal, that way you can easily get back to it when you want to. (recommended to use a world with no environmental or sentinel hazards)

I have this kind of set up with a teleporter in my base and to find the portal nearby I left a Save Beacon near it.

Taking note of the latt/long is an option, but a bit cumbersome IMO. If I am putting down a base anywhere in the system, I prefer to use a save beacon. As stated already, use a color coding scheme so you know exactly what the beacon is for. I use black for portals and nothing else. Others like purple (P for portal), but whatever makes the most sense to you.

If you are not planning to build a base in the system, then again as already stated just put down a base computer as close as possible to the portal and give it a name that is easy to understand, e.g. "Portal Planet". Benefit to this is that you can easily return from any teleporter if you just want easy access to a portal.

As a general rule NMS doesn't give tools for backtracking. You've got discovery logs and milestone tracking to make sure you know just how much you've done, but assemble that information into a map, a narrative, or any kind of useful guide to finding neat stuff? You're supposed to wander the stars in an aimless daze and marvel at the game's scale, not try to do something useful.

One comment, you need at most one portal per galaxy so I just slap a minimal base down next to a portal on a not too foul world in every galaxy I visit.

The quickest way to find anything specific is to use the teleport on the space station. Look under "All Bases" and search for any base that indicates points of interest //ie..portal base, fungal mold farm, sentinal pillar etc.... it may not be the exact one on the same planet but all poi's perform the same function...
