Freighter build limit
Be aware your freighter has a build limit just like any planet-side base has. I cannot find out the number of item, but I've reached it. The limit seems a bit on the low side; it has to be counting every single thing you add to the ship.

I filed a ZenDesk ticket - because it really does seem a bit low. I hope they can raise the limit.

the freighter build area is 19x21x15 so almost 6000 tiles... plus you can place small items like lockers, posters, wall hangings, and chests... just like planetary bases, all of these count toward the limit... i, too, do not know what the current limit is for freighter bases... i'm only providing some numbers to work with...

Just to make sure: Are you playing on your old save and thus already having a lot of bases?
I ask because there are two build limits: 3k parts per base and 16k in total for your save.
Which means that your impression of being on the low side of things in regards to freighters could be a coincidence upon arriving 16k parts in total for all your bases combined.
If it's not an old save...well...than it would be intersting to know how many parts you actually did use on your freighter.

Indeed it is an old save, many hundreds of hours into it. I know, get a life. But the game's been out a long time.

Based on @SaD-82 comment of 3k per and 16k in total, a fully built-out base would be 3k, so at most you could have what, 5.x fully built out bases in total? I've a lot of bases to be sure, but none have ever max'd out...

What I did in the freighter was build out sections, like 11 x 6 for plants, 2 rows of 5 deep on the space collectors, 10 storage containers, all the NPC workstations and 6 command centers for freighter missions. I put up all my posters and that's about it. I'm thinking something is up with how they count items on the freighter, because surely that limited amount of stuff ought not exceed 3k.

Since all storage containers are probably over 90% full, I suppose those inventories add up as well, yes?

Most likely you exceeded the total parts limit (16K). To test this, try removing some base stuff from your least liked base and see if it suddenly frees up building on your freighter.

the goat fungus editor shows you how many parts per base and allows you to export and import them. just be careful, it requires a bit of tweaking and it probably not well tested on freighter bases
ohiorice Aug 3, 2022 @ 6:14pm
Okay, I'll put back some pieces on the freighter first to reach the limit, then test as you suggest on another base.

Well, congrats - you nailed it. I have apparently reached my limit. I removed the cable hider option on a base, went back to the freighter, I could add a new item.

So I guess the question I have is - do they count each item in storage against the 16k total? If you have one item with a quanty of 50, hopefully the item count is only affected by 1, not 50, right?

Now more than ever I wish they'd add some sorts and filters for all our bases, so we could order and filter them, for the purpose to free up some space.

I have not use the goat fungus editor... going to have to look into it. Thanks folks!!!

The build limit is a sad sorry joke. All of these amazing planets with so much great build potential and we get this itty bitty build limit. They really need to increase that. I don't even have fun building anymore. I have to sit there like its a major decision - "Is that poster worth another piece off the sad, sorry construction limit?"

AFAIK the inventory in storage does not count toward the limit but the storage units, themselves, do...

Build limit desperately needs to go away, or at least be upped by like 500%. I’m out of old bases to delete and I’m sick of using alternate saves to build more in the Hub.

This game has a lot of junk in the form of decorations including things like posters and stuff. My advice is don't build any of them.
Also you get rewards for finishing expedition. Don't even bother to collect the rewards.
ohiorice Aug 4, 2022 @ 5:07am
Well, they must have some reason, like oh, this variable can only carry a value up to this, so if we allow more than that, it'll gen an error so....

I'd like them to up the limit or remove it completely... I could see possibly limiting the number of bases, but allowing us to go nuts within the base itself.

Thanks for the help in figuring this out.

is build limited because of computer performance or network/internet perfeormance or limited support due program bug or something ect?
NZ.Zero Aug 4, 2022 @ 5:26am
As I understand it, the build limit is because each base is held ina local save file which has to be uploaded every time someone enters another persons base, so the size is limited to stop loading delays. Thats as I understand it anyway.

But it make no sense because even with the same local file based system they could have a seperate file for each base and just call those, which would be more efficient anyway. So I dont know. I guess they figure that once you have 16k parts they already have your money anyway so why should they care :/

My other assumption is that this is a 2016 game designed for the pre/early SSD era of low read-write speeds and they havent updated that mechanic.

I am pretty sure the build limit isnt anywhere near low.
