All species 'undiscovered', names gone too
All my species have been 'undiscovered', including my home planet, and all names seem to be gone too. Is this 'normal' (well, NMS normal levels of random changes anyway) or a bug relating to the most recent update?

If you scan those animals, are they still listed as your discovery (without getting new nanites)?
If yes, then that's normal and happened because you visited several new systems since that discovery. This happens with all your systems and planets - they will even vanish from your discovery log.
If no, then the ODS has problems - which will fix itself after a certain amount of hours/days/weeks.
I noticed half of my discovery list are reset like that too about a month ago when I revisit them after a long time.

Not a huge deal since it just means more units and nanites for me from scanning. However, if you're the type that insist on a complete faunas scan on every planet that can be problematic. :steamhappy:
ahh ok,,, its a 'feature' :(
i scan them and I get nanites, listed as me or someone else, depends who 'found' them first time.

I dont need the nanites but i do like farming and collecting pets and its a pain when all your creature records just get deleted!

If you scan them and someone else found them, you will get no nanites. Ever.
If you scan them and had scanned them before so that upon a new scan it's listed as "Discovered by you x months ago", you don't receive nanites either. Ever.

If you know that you have scanned them in the past already and now receive nanites again, then it's just the ODS that's throwing up.

The more easy way to check this, is:
If you go into the discovery log for that planet and see in the fauna-entry 9/9 creatures discovered (even when having question marks in all animal entries), then you will get no nanites for scanning and you know that it's working as intended. If you see 0/9 instead, it's a problem with the ODS that will fix itself.

I repeat the important part:
If the ODS works correctly you will NEVER receive new nanites for scanning old animals that are listed as undiscovered again. Only if the ODS has problems.
This is a REAL issue. I re-visit the same planets often and on many of them, where I have discovered the creatures and plants already, they all show up with the red icon like I never discovered them in the first place.
Yes, planets I return to after a while and even the planet with my settlement, which i return to very regularly, shows everything as though I haven't scanned them before after a while. I haven't bothered to re-scan all the animals to see if I get nanites again, perhaps I will next time. I get units for re-scanning them.

I also haven't checked in the discovery tab whether it says I discovered them and when. I had just assumed they dropped off the discovery list like space stations do from the teleporter list.

Exactly, rescaning is a huge hassle. but i was using the self-built catalog as a record of what animals are where. Now its all gone.

WHAT? space stations drop off the list? can u tell me about that, because I am relying on those to navigate!
(assume that I need to drop a base in every system otherwise it'll forget those too??!!)
I think the space stations that appear in the list to travel back to at teleporters is limited to around 30 (not counted, just my vague impression), which I think might be the most recently visited. My play style has evolved to be very nomadic, with a very few, carefully selected systems that I return to.

It isn't long into each save that I start to lose systems from my list so I either make notes or drop a base for the systems that have specific s class upgrades/derelict freighters/crashed ships to scrap/resources etc. depending on whether I think I will return a few times or maybe want to pop back over the longer term.

The truth is that as time goes on I tend to move onwards more and go back less frequently, apart from my settlement. I am on my third settlement in my current save having taken on a new one twice - the first swap was because I wasn't happy with the balance with the first settlement, and the second swap when I managed to trigger one on a storm free paradise planet in a system with an easy derelict freighter that has S class upgrades.

90. 9 per page. Ten pages.

No Man's Sky is a game about looking ahead to the next undiscovered planet, not having any clue where you've been.

No, I'm serious. The game design is completely geared to making everything so unique and forgettable that there's never any reason to backtrack unless you plopped a base somewhere. And there's a large-but-not-that-large limit on bases and cumulative base components, too, so planting a base everywhere isn't really viable.

The game isn't designed for you to get a sense of accomplishment for having discovered this region or explored this area or any such thing. It's designed to lose you in its pointless vastness.
My whole inv reset and i had to restart and that.

Sounds like you need to try another game to refresh yourself a bit.

Anyway I think this is a little unfair. It's a good game, with limits. Some of the planets are amazing and unforgettable. Today I rode a dragonfly through a radiation storm among the storm crystals and luminous toadstools, not that forgettable TBH :)
Some resetting binner.
