you can also visit the space station and there's a similar machine to the left of the exosuit guy there...
on planet, you can find drop pods which will also let you get one slot https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Drop_Pod
There’s a machine next to the Exosuit mod merchant that lets you upgrade your suit inventory. This is the most important early on. There’s a second one on the Anomaly next to suit research. They’re both one use per star system.
You get your first base storage item early. If you follow the main quest, that unlocks the other 9 base storage items after a bit of work.
Ship inventory is mostly upgraded by buying bigger ships. There are mods that increase ship inventory, but they’re uncommon until you start buying and scrapping ships for parts, which cost millions of units. You can buy ship inventory increases, but it’s silly expensive.
Freighter inventory is like ship inventory. You mostly buy bigger freighters, but there are inventory upgrade items that drop rarely. There are Derelict Freighter missions that consistently give you 1 inventory upgrade, but the admission fee is 5 million units per run.
You can also on occasions find drop pod cordinates for a price at technology vendors sometimes at -30% discounted price if lucky and you don't want to try your lock finding the drop pods through exploration.
Or you could just do the smart thing and use a save editor to add them all at once. If there is one thing I absolutely DO NOT have the time nor patience for in this game, it is pratting about with inventory expansion. So many damned inventories to expand, and so many items that are needed for all sorts of stuff. Even with a full 42 general, tech and cargo slots on the Exosuit, it is still entirely too easy to run out of space. Like maddeningly so. Screw that noise. The game takes up enough time without inventory space bothers.
Suit: buy nav charts for droppods. Better- every new station you go to gives away a free suit slot.
Multitool: get a better tool (spacestations)
I usually combine that with grabbing any salvage modules that are sitting around. You can fully kit out your exosuit with minimal cost other than time that way and without having to leave that one planet.
As soon as you get your ship, you can do 5 jumps. On the 5th jump, you will arrive at a freighter being attacked by pirates. After you shoot the pirates, which is very easy, you get invited on to the freighter and the captain will give it to you free of charge.
The freighter comes with ten storage rooms, which you can install with magnetised ferrite and sodium. That will give you 200 storage slots.
Next, go to a pirate system and shoot all the cargo pods on any freighters there. The freighters have turrets to defend themselves, so shoot them as soon as they shoot you, then learn where they are so you can shoot them first. Some of the pods have frigate modules, which you need to install the matter beam on the freighter. You will also get loads of contraband, magnetised ferrite, chromatic metal and things like that, plus Uranium for ship launch fuel. Sell the contraband in any non-pirate system to get megabucks. To get more freighters to shoot, fly to the planet, shoot up the ones there, then back to the station and shoot up those, then back to the planet, and repeat until your inventory is full.
install the matter beam, then whenever you want to use the 200 inventory slots, you can summon the freighter ti wherever you are. If you're on the ground, you can summon it to the sky above you.. Those 200 slots wil appear in your inventory plus however many normal freighter inventory and cargo slots to use like normal, so about 230 slots in total.
