The beauty of the freighter is it's a flying closet too and once you get the matter beam you can access from anywhere in system, and with the exocraft beam, they are also available. It is a major win win. No clue where you are in game so this may all be old news.
If you are new and doing the expedition, just use your freighter, ignore the rest of my blathering until you have completed the expedition.
Fairly experienced player here and I don't have a hauler, just use a freighter and 1 row of the 3 rows of my S-Class exotic for essentials like launch fuel, tritium, hyperdrive fuel, shield recharge.
That leaves me more storage capacity than I need. Playing survival or Perma-death with lower capacity limits a hauler would be a lot more useful in comparison. (Lower per-slot capacity caps)
