Experimental Branch 09/06
Hello Everyone,

First of all, thanks so much to everyone who has already spent time playing No Man's Sky and letting us know about any issues you've experienced.

Steam users are able to opt-in to the Experimental Branch, where we have pushed a patch to address some problems. We'll be rolling out these fixes to other platforms as soon as possible.

To play in Experimental, right-click on No Man's Sky from the Steam library page and select "Properties". Among the available tabs will be the "BETAS" tab. Enter "3xperimental" in the textbox and press "CHECK CODE", then select it from the dropdown menu.

The patch notes are as follows:

Experimental Branch 09/06
  • Fixed a creature-related crash that could occur when quitting to the main menu.
  • Fixed an issue which incorrectly caused players to take damage while on planet.
  • Prevent pets from taking damage from the player.
  • Fixed a GPU crash on PlayStation 4.

As always, thank you to all players who use Experimental and take the time to report any issues you encounter.

Please note there is the possibility that experimental builds may introduce new issues that haven't been caught in test. We'd like to recommend that all players back up their save files, by making a local copy of the st_[userid] folder found here: %appdata%\HelloGames\NMS\

Note that we don't anticipate any issues here. However, performing your own backups could mean the difference between resuming play immediately, or waiting for the next patch.

If you decide to opt out of experimental and return to the main branch, we strongly recommend resuming from a backed-up save from the main branch, rather than taking an experimental branch save back to main, which may cause unexpected behaviour.

Feedback and reports of new bugs/issues being found on Experimental are welcome, so please reply to this thread or submit a ticket to https://hellogames.zendesk.com/ with the phrase "Steam Experimental" in the ticket title. If you are running any mods for the game, please list them along with your bug report.

Hello Everyone,
  • Prevent pets from taking damage from the player.

Awesome, could you make it so laylaps and pets become transparent to the scanner? they really, really like to get in the way of your field of view. Also it makes it impossible to scan things while mounting a pet.

I sent this recommendation to the zendesk like 3 or 4 updates ago =/

No more quad pets summoning sentinels on you because they ran into your mining beam :)

Ever since the experimental update I am getting a black screen/crash whenever i exit my ship. Unplayable. Anyone else experiencing this?

I see a lot of improvements playing in VR with my Quest 2 but crashes when go in and out the mech exosuit, sometimes ride a pet is so crazy too, even in flat screen in the present expedition. Anyway that game is amazing and it's getting better every few months! :-)

Seeing black screen when exiting ship too, also when dying. Seems to be crashing on save?

Please fix the VR issues! (Oculus Rift S)

I currently cannot play the game due to the fact that I have invisible hands / body in VR unless I'm moving. And when I DO move, it's a flicker that seems to repeatedly cancel any and all actions I try to take.

I love the game but I only care to play in VR for the immersion.

...laylaps and pets...they really, really like to get in the way of your field of view. Also it makes it impossible to scan things while mounting a pet.
If you put the Quick Menu, Pet Direction commands on a Hotkey, (I use keys 1 for pointing and 4 for calling them back) it's then easy and immersive to control your pet. I also use a controller and put the calling and dismissing of my favourite pet onto a long press button or alternatively it could be added to a keyboard hotkey.
You don't have to set hotkeys instead use the quick pet menu to choose the directional pet commands.

This way when mining they won't bother you and you can simply send them away, As a bonus if they are equipped with the right tech they may bring back found items and drop them beside you.

You can use the Analysis Visor when in first person mode. I set a Hotkey 2 to toggle between 3rd person and 1st person and use the target sweep mode while travelling on a creature. :D It's all very clever programming! This works well in the current expedition in difficult terrain.

Creatures personalities inevitably mean some are more devoted and some more independent. Altering creature traits will create pets do what you want, however they do have AI of their own.

With the new beta update the created memory fragments from the expedition have been reverted to C class instead of the current S class

I think the real reason for all these stutter issues with the game engine is to do with the games sync with the gpu's. I have been messing with this game and farcry 5 as they both dont have true fullscreen mode. I have been testing them on multiple pc's with different monitors and lcd screens. Both games show the same signs of stutter and it all looks sync based rather than performance.

No mans sky exhibits strange behaviour regarding vsync with nvidia hardware in windows 11.

I dont think the game is running correctly at the same hz rate as the monitors due to how the game detects hardware. Why is is that sometimes you have to restart the game when enabling vsync in game on different monitors but then don't other times?

Many times I had to toggle between borderless modes and fullscreen modes for the game to correctly engage vsync. Restarting the game then lost vsync again and i had to redo the process. This is on multiple drivers for the 1080. Even if it was set in the nvidia panel.
Even capping the fps at 30 does not stop the sync stutters.

The smoothest game play i got was using a 4k led tv, this seemed to hide the little stutters better than monitors and I could fly around in tight circles and get no little judders. Still got the horrid huge lags when leaving a planet or entering a planet. Still get lags approaching a station and again on entering a station and climbing the ramps for the first time. These have been there since the Vulkan update.

The game just isn't working right in windows with detecting hardware and syncing without a true fullscreen mode.

Farcry 5 seems to be the same as that does not have a true fullscreen mode either and again works much better on a 4k tv and using different resolutions. On the monitors using hdmi and display port it has sync issues and stutters.

I think people maybe are not seeing this on different hardware due to low fps which does mask the little judders soemwhat.

Also something that has to be fixed is the onscreen items such as rocks, trees etc rendering above the ground and then lowering into place when you are flying over a planet in a ship. It just makes it all look broken. Why cant they just render in place? why move them down. Some even go right through the ground and disappear. Why create a render system that does this. It looks really bad.

Also there is no point having an animated loading screen like the starfield if it hitches and stutter due to the shaders being loaded. Right after the no mans sky logo pops up it starts and does it every loadup. It has the ms rate goes up to 1000 at times and pauses the whole pc. This is on a 5900x with very high amount of ram.

There is no way you could show this game to anyone without them questioning why it stutters like that. There are even stutters in all the promotion clips used for advertising the game. The engine is clearly broken or just now overloaded especially after the next gen update and the update that changed planets.

When will it be possible to search for systems already discovered on the map?
when are you going to make driving less arcade?
when will allow more customization of commands in options?
when will the textures and lighting improve?

Or, like most graphical hiccups these days, there's a bottleneck or some loop in the code somewhere preventing hardware from doing it's job properly. The amount of times a single bug or human error can completely derail everything under the hood is astounding. In my experience so far, performance has only gotten consistently better for me. The only time I've had any issues is trying to run it on my hard drive instead of my SSD. That's when I get massive load times, vsync bugs, and lag spikes.
