Then you’ll know that fighters are very nimble & have a high damage potential. Your hauler has a high shield potential.
So… the “best ship” is whichever one makes you happy as you explore.
The best overall ship is an Exotic, stats wise.
Fully upgraded, all ships are mostly the same, stats-wise.
haulers are the storage king and shield tank, worst warp range
shuttles have a little more manuverablity but less storage- sort of tank like, meh warp range
fighters excel at offense, ok defense, ok storage, and very good movement, ok warp range
explorers best warp range, great view, less storage, great movement, ok at offense,
exotics pretty good view, great movement, good all around compared to other types.
Good news is they all can be upgraded. There will be minor differences in the stats with better tendencies as noted above once you get to S class. Anything better than C class is OP for the game so it becomes just a Nerd Geek out once you look at S class stats.
My second favorite is exotics, they handle so sweet.
Fighters are cool too, there's some really nice looking ones. They are actually my 2nd favorite to 'collect' after the solar ships.
And I like explorers for the jump range, when I'm going to be going long distance. I don't do that very often though, so mostly mine just collects dust.
I don't tend to keep any haulers or shuttles in my fleet, but I do like to have a hauler in the early game when exosuit slots are not yet unlocked. I play survival (and a little permadeath) so storage in the early game is a real struggle.
Are you saying your brother is abnormal? He's probably in heaven for 3 more weeks or so...
Later on, esp on A and S class, its really up to you, what you think looks best and how you want to role play the game. Everything you get will be OP compared to any NPCs out there, even sentinel capital ships, since your weapon range and power is so damn high. With 3 shield upgrades, you can basically tank 5-6 enemies at the same time with little danger, esp if you use Beam weapon to steal enemy shields.
damage-output using phase beams as a reference is aroudn 12% lower compared with fighters

There is absollutely no content in the game, though, where 12% difference in damage matters. Heck, 20% difference doesn't matter.
There's really no reason to choose one's ship with any concern other than "do I love how it looks" other than, perhaps, "Do I like the view from the cockpit". And you aren't wrong....those sails really cramp the view.
Once you get enough modules installed it doesn't really matter what ship you are using and hyperspace range doesn't really matter that much either. Once you have enough hyperspace modules installed you barely use any fuel to make a jump. Having to make one extra to go the same distance as an explorer or an exotic over a long distance isn't a big deal especially since the destinations are the goal in the game and not particularly the travel.
1.: Awesome looks.
2.: Awesome colours.
3 to whatever number.: Nothing else.
By this I always find the best ship types and ships.
Slapping some modules on them and they work fine.
You can look for specific stats or just go with the vibe of something that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside if it lands near you. I prefer the second option.
and the reply "a sporebat"
in the end it is "a matter of taste" as the stork said to the frog
a matter of preferences
Check these 3 ships I own out. I have them cause they look cool. Still need to get a Living Ship, but these are all great ships.

You wanna know which ship I fly all the time. I fight in. Go from planet to planet. System to System! To me this is the best ship I have. Fully upgraded (well they all) and just my favorite.

Yep, that's my Pink Neo (cause it has those hover pads like the ships from the matrix). I have been using this ship since before the first update. It was the best ship I could find that I liked the look of back when ships were different enough with cargo, speed and combat. It had a good cargo hold and was fast enough to outrun everything. Now, everything can be the same, but I still love this ship. To many memories. She ain't the shiniest, newest ship out there, but she is mine. :D
Oh and this is the ship that got me through Perma and I still use in my perma save.

That's the pre-order bonus ship. That baby is fully tricked out now as well but before that. It was the best ship for starting when I started my Perma. It had the largest cargo of any ship and tech hold any ship in early game. Even hard press to find anything better later with out spending a ton. It also looks cool. :D
So ya, don't worry about stats or such. Find a ship you think looks fun and cool and upgrade it. Get a couple if you want to fly something different now and then. You can have 6. Name them after your favorite pokemon. ;P
Aren't all ships upgradable to the same ridiculous number of slots? Not that it matters, once you've maxed out your exosuit. Haulers do generally have the highest storage capacity when you buy them.
The only thing I really care about upgrading in a ship is the hyperdrive. I mostly only warp to top-tier systems to maximize the amount of inventory I can buy, and I hate it when I can't find one and end up reaching the end of my jump capacity.
I only really fly exotics, mostly because they handle very well.
