Are there any other games with nearly unlimited procedural planets you can explore?
Why cant this genre be super big instead of stupid zombies or shooters?

EA's S.P.O.R.E. Was the first. It is proceedurally generated too but it is simpler in some ways and more complex in others.

Elite Dangerous. Not unlimited but probably more than a trillion planets easily, so more than you could ever explore. It's more science and real life based though, so no funny plants and dinosaur animals on each planet.

There is also Space Engine if you don't mind it not being a game directly but just want to explore procedurally generated planets. It probably has the largest amount of planets in any game, since it simulates the entire universe.

Starbound is basically space Terraria with a nearly unlimited number of procedurally generated planets to explore.

still havent found better game than NMS yet
the entire "NMS like" genre is far worse than NMS itself
from the one who will broke your PC because of kernel bugs, or scam game companies, or sole/small team devs trying to make better NMS but to slow to work for it
NMS still the best on their genre, yet worse quality than normal games from another genres

Because it's a niche.
That's capitalism for you: More people = more money; fewer people = less money.
Game companies (almost always) don't exist because they want to bring joy to humanity as if they were some kind of Santa Claus. They are companies. They want to make money.
And there are two ways for doing this:
Catering to the mass and getting revenue out of it; catering to a niche group and getting revenue out of it.
And indie companies (such as HG) usually choose the second option because this way they can ensure that at least a small group will play their games, while going for the first option can lead to be ignored because you can't compete with big companies in terms of eye candy and blandness (things people like the most nowadays...).
Indie companies (and their games) can set a trend if this game is really well done and really well received and something completely new. And neither one of those things is true for any game in this genre.
Money. This is the reason. As always.

nope, wasn't first. there was elite and frontier: elite II and before that was Starflight and Starflight II. might be some even before that, but that's the first procgen'd universe games i played.
