If you build the storage on your frighter, you can access them from the freighter inventory tab and use drag and drop, but planet-side it seems the only option is to interact with them.
Personally, I just build 1 container on my planet-side bases and send things to it with the X-pickup option to "send to container inventory" and then actively sort and arrange it all into the correct containers later from my freighter.
If you have a freighter and the matter beam, things become much easier with storage containers. If the freighter is in system, you can access the containers from anywhere you are in the system. You can add or take from them.
On the freighter you can craft without needing to pull stuff from containers. It will just be considered part of your inventory for crafting.
Edit: There is a trick if your storage containers are not powered. You have to be near them at your land base, but you can still use the inventory system to work with them. It is obviously better to have them powered, but that is not always convenient in the moment.
That was under the freighter tab. Its confusing if you think too hard about it. The containers on your base are accessed via freighter containers. I build all the containers at my main base then drop stuff in there using (X) just like I was standing in my freighter base.
The magic of object pointers
Having the containers in your base just gives you access at your base but you'll have go into them individually.. They don't tab like they do on the freighter inventory screen.
I don't recall ever being able to access them from the inventory tabs without the freighter.
This is where the confusion sets in. When your freighter is in the system, you don't have to walk up to base containers to access them. The quick drop works the same way.
On base you can access storage containers that you build and don't even have to power them up. Open your suit inventory and press X on an empty slot and you can cycle through everything in storage, in your exocraft, and in your ship.
The more useful note is this applies to the storage containers in your freighter as well. With the item teleportation upgrade installed you can access your storage containers in your inventory just as long as your freighter exists in the same solar system as you. Crafting recipes will feed from it too for ingredients.
