i haven't done it in a while but when i do, yeah, i just teleport and sell at the terminal even though i could wait around for ships to land and buy/sell with them... the few percent difference isn't enough to warrant that for me... i mean, what's a few hundred thousand units when you already have millions or billions? ;)
The wealthier a star system is the more trade goods available (roughly) and the higher tier goods are available. 3 star economies will have all 5 tiers of goods, 2 star economies will have the bottom 4 available, and 1 star economies will have only the bottom 3 available to purchase.
Its more expensive to buy trade goods from the space station than it is to buy them from a trading post on planet. You earn more profit selling to a trading post on planet than you do from selling to a space station. In other words its faster to buy, teleport, and sell than it is to scan for a trading post, travel, and sell but you get about 20% more buying and selling to and from trading posts. Having tested this with another forumite it works out to be about the same number of units per minute using either method.
The other thing to keep in mind is what kind of trade goods are wanted where.
Trading -> Advanced Materials -> Scientific -> [back to Trading]
or
Mining -> Manufacturing -> Technology -> Power Generation -> [back to Mining]
I've not done this in Exp 7, as I haven't been able to afford the tech. But just flying a ship between them is working good enough.
There two trade loops. In a new game I try to find 3 star economy systems that fit each product:
###12 Christor-Olev XIII (** Sells Scientific / Buys Advanced Materials) ==== AnchorPoint #4 ====
This can get you from 5 million to 100. You need the cargo space few million to start. There is also a cool down time on the merchants.
But as Johnny in the Clouds mentioned, with pirate systems and piracy you can make units much faster now.
