Don't beat yourself up too much. I've completed all the expeditions and was not certain this would happen. There's a first time for everything.
I thought this as well: the higher costs (in the event) were there to constrain player's desire to pursue actions that wouldn't aid them in completing the event's requirements.
The real "pros" know that Survival mode becomes almost the same as Normal mode once you get 10 to 20 hours in. The only difference is crappy inventory sizes, more extreme planets, and an almost guaranteed pirate attack in each new system.
If you are playing for the challenge, it is pretty much used up by the end of the Expedition. The only reason to really continue would be if you are seeking the Steam achievement or like the stuff you acquired along the way.
