Three reasons.
1. It's in direct conflict with the theme of the game.
2. There are other games that already exist that do this far better than NMS could.
3. It would take a year or more of developer time better spent on core game play.
But there's just no value to holding systems. Nothing to fight over. I've explored a lot and even with the expos there's something missing in this game. Some "other" universe to go to ....maybe into the past, when the Gek ruled as tyrants
Imagine having Sonic the Hedgehog appear in a space station and asking you for a race across a star system in which you have to beat those two italian brothers who love to stick their hands in toilets. It could be incredible. If there just would be any other game with this concept out there...
It would be incredibly like 4X series.
Now imagine all that developer effect being focused on pushing planet generation to the next level. Planets that I truly life like and different from each other. How incredible would that be?
aliens animals need a big upgrade bc it's still mostly badger-things and the usual same same
But it's a thread about combat so, you know. Space war would be cool, even just as an alternate mission, to a universe in the past. Wouldn't be hard
Remember, there are about 8-10 people working on this so "all of the above" is not an option. The real question is what gives the best reward for given effort. I think that is playing to NMS's strengths and not shoe horning in things that don't fit. Settlements is a good case study for this, they probably spend 30-40% of their annual labor on that, and its terrible. They could beat that dead horse for another two years and it still wouldn't run. They could have spent that effort on two or three new biomes and half a dozen new fauna types.
in NMS, you can turn on PvP and go ever further by playing in Permadeath mode, actually destroying each other and having to start over building your character again if that's how hardcore you want to get. Kind of like Days of Dragons or something.
Ship PvP Is my favorite. Although I play in Normal mode cuz I don't want to lose my ship. I suck at Weapons PvP, but it's amazing to watch really great players at it that are geared up to the max, because of all the infinitely configurable jetpacks, multitools, shields, etc.
Although I don't know of many people that do it, and haven't gotten to go watch a match, I've seen videos of some of the exocraft competitions and WOW! That's some crazy stuff!
So, I just don't buy the 'no PvP worth a darn' in this game. You have no friends to play with or you're not researching to find people to play with, or you just want some player finder cluttering up the game for no reason. Plenty of games out there with great PvP that have no app built in for it.
Later taters.
Agree with this. The usual suspects are copy-pasting the same old arguments that they were making years ago. There's no stopping them, at this point it's full-on OCD.
You can't sway the haters on this forum, don't even try.

STar Trek online has pvp also but hardly anyone ever ques up for it. That's bc there is no worthwhile structure to the PVP.
So in NMS, if there is pvp that's wonderful but it's not very accessible.
However, a new galaxy that was war-torn is doable, with slightly different rules and costs for respawning characters. It would allow devs to create entirely different encounters for it without impacting the original game. Maybe even settlements could be included, to give them purpose as conquerable territory. On top of that, it could be a galaxy where pvp is always on, so ...it creates a different, less harmonious atmosphere.
Though haters will dump n that idea also. Well, how about a pvp Expo? Could be fun
I do like the harmony though, in NMS. Besides the annoying buzz of sentinel swarms, it's a very relaxing universe. But you know. All things change in a dynamic universe
