When on foot and you shoot at a passing ship, they shoot back!

I have so wanted to shoot passing ships so I took a shot at one just now with my mining laser after the 4.0 upgrade and the guy (Vy'keen) circled around and started shooting back at me. I didn't take damage. Has this always been the case? I hopped in my starter ship and the guy was definitely mad at me. I could hit him with my boltcaster also. Now if I could shoot one down and claim the crashed ship...

I'm loving the new cargo layout, increased stack size for non elemental items and stacking of module upgrades is great. Trade stations have stopped selling oxygen for my new start, I wonder if that is a new thing or a bug.

Yes, not sure if since release but I have shot ships passing by before and they attack you.

Yes, this was true prior to version 4.0. I tried the same thing last week to see what would happen and the the ship turned around and starting shooting at me on the ground.

i did that some time last year while swimming in one of my early saves... yes, the ship i shot and his three wingmen all turned around and came back for me... i jumped off my scooter and went deep under the (water after taking some damage from them, IIRC)... every time i popped my head up, they were there circling looking for me... i finally just went under water for long enough they de-aggroed and went on their merry ways... needless to say, i've not attempted that experiment since then but i was quite impressed at their response time
