Permadeath mode is impossible

All of the sudden I get randomly attacked by space pirates in ships while I'm on a planet. killed me in less than a second. the attack came out of nowhere, and there was no way I could have survived.

Turn MP off maybe? Most pirate attacks happen at a building site and there is a warning.

Check your Network settings and make sure player damage is turned off.

I tried to be killed when a planetary pirat raid started. Hopped up on top of the building i was in when it started. Took direct blasts, fire flared around me for a second or two, and no damage.
Figured there would be a death title, it's why I tried.

Edit: do planetary pirate attacks use MP settings?

I've never taken damage from pirates while on foot either, I do not think MP Damage settings effect it at all, but not sure.

multiplayer was turned off! Pirates. they came out of nowhere. blasted me into oblivion while I was on foot. End of story. Just screw you player, You're dead!

Ok, seemed odd MP would affect planet pirates. Had to check because I was yelling like Jack Sparrow when they were shooting at the building I was parked at, "STOP BLOWING HOLES IN MY SHIP!"

Well, even with MP off people can join your game.

pirates near buildings dont aim for you, if you were targetted directly or far from buildings its more likely another player IME

Its easy, the moment you get the warning, use your multi-tool to make a hole. Yep, dig, make a quick tunnel. Done. Safe. You probably tried running on surface and was a easy target.

I have experienced what the OP is stating. It has only happened once on one of my Survival saves but I lost about 1/2 of my shield bar which was buffed with 6 sentinel upgrades. So 1/2 way is a lot of dmg that would have easily killed a brand new save.

This was prolly about 1 out of 50 pirate attacks that as many have already mentioned, only attack buildings & not the player.

I was playing with MP disabled & there were NO other players around… it WAS a pirate & they were targeting ME not a building.

I've been attacked by pirates a couple of times out in the middle of nowhere. Always a high conflict system (3 stars). They do some damage and they can kill if you don't evade them. Digging an L-shaped tunnel in the ground causes them to lose interest and leave.

Yes it happens. Brand new save for me, mp disabled. Essentialy it was about 3 shots to kill me. Not as strong as you described, unless your sentinel upgrades were bad in the shield area.

OP did nothing wrong, it was just something new to him and he didnt react quickly enough. But the idea is, you get the warning, dig a quick tunnel and you are safe. Remember permadeath is not only a 'mode'', you gotta make the best of your life there, live your character as much as you can. Be careful everywhere, always. For some people is not worth the trouble, for others is quite a joy.

The pirate attacks on planet must be really glitchy or maybe the game mode changes things. In normal mode, I have wandered around buildings under attack for several minutes and not got a scratch. I would just go about my normal routine to get the save, collect from containers, and do business with the NPCs if it was a minor settlement. I just assumed that players taking damage had done something rash like shooting at the ships with their tool.

So weird that some of us experience just the annoyance of explosions while on foot and other are actually injured by the explosions.

Pirates strafing you on foot is bad when you’re in Permadeath. There’s a simple solution: dig a hole and crawl in. I recently played Permadeath for about 50 hours to get To Live Forever, and I did exactly this at least twice.

I’ve been killed by pirates strafing me in a Survival game, so the assertion that you don’t take damage isn’t true.

During Expedition 7 AI pirate ships would attack ground based players (I have no reason to believe that has been changed) and the weapons fire does damage the player BUT you can avoid the fire and the damage. The weapons fire always travels in a straight line if you strafe right or left you can exit the line of fire. Digging a hole isn't fool proof you can still be damaged by weapons fire underground if you didn't get down far enough.

The pirates make 3-4 runs and then leave.
