Once upon a time with the regular classes of ships (shuttles, fighters, explorers, haulers) physical characteristics determined maximum slots, but now they only effect starting slots.
Go with whatever you like the look of.
What people call "rare" changes depending on whatever is popular or sought after at the time. Then it's found, a ton of people get it via gylph sharing, and now it's no longer rare.
It's like with the Capital Freighters, they are less frequently encountered than regular frieghters, but most players have one, so they are very common to see.

often the crashed-ship-loc works from years ago as well, but ofc i didnt tried all ;-)
Rare in this case meaning it doesn't spawn as often. That would be squid for exotic. A lot of players also like the guppies or mosquito exotics. All can be and have been shared with coordinates for years so nothing really considered rare these days.
The rarest individual ship is a living ship since they have so many variations and don't spawn so each one is very rare and almost unique.
The second rarest is a Royal exotic since they have many variations but spawn infrequently, so each variation is very rare.
The third rarest is a 'standard' system ship, since they have so many variations that each system's ship designs are unlikely to be the same in any other system - (although in that system they seem common).
The least rare is the squid, (on a galactic scale).since they have no variations except colour, so although they are very hard to find, the same colour of squid will be exactly the same.'model' and will be found by many other players in other systems in exactly the same variation as yours.
Sounds weird because squids are so individually rare, but this is borne out by the 'ship.finder' websites where you'll see several variations for a particular colour of squid, but usually only one location for everything else.
One possible exception is the solars - there seems to be a heavy weighting towards certain models and colours - e.g. I'm sure I've seen white and silver ravens in 2 or 3 systems now. So certain solars may be the commonest, but we can't know for sure without knowing how their seeds work.
